what is "service closing control connection"?

hi ,

  i am kinda new with this download and upload thing but sure is willing to learn. ran thru some of the posts here but cant seem to find any similar case.

situation:

got internet connection problem for a few days, technician on the line asked to change some settings on my MAC, then problem solved;
managed to online and wanted to download some files from a ftp server subscribed;
connecting halfway, a message popped up:

   Message from the Server:
   Service closing control connection.

what does it really mean? is it my connection setting causing it? cause before my internet failed, everything was ok and i was downloading crazily.... (thanks to yummy )

i hope it is not a big problem.

The message means just what it says - the server closed the connection for some reason. What that reason might be, I really don't know for sure... it could simply be that there are too many people connected. To find out more, please send me an FTP Transcript file when this happens again. Select 'Save FTP Transcript' from the File menu and send it to support at yummysoftware dot com

I doubt that it's the cause of this problem, but what settings did your technician tell you to change?

dear,

   i have contacted the other party regarding this matter, they will provide me a fiidback soon. hopefully i can download later.
   
   the settings that the technician asked me to changed was some settings in my network preferences, she asked me change the detail in my Search Domains, asked me to add web proxies(http), add a string of numbers in the web proxy server, and disable PASV(passive ftp mode)

   well, since i dont know anything about all this stuff, whatever they asked, i just do it.

Hmmmm, isn't there at least 2 "connections" for an ftp transport, a control connection and a separate data streaming connection?

<editorial>Eeeeew, proxies are EVIL (at times)! I know all about them in corporate networks, but I didn't think they'd be used for "home" connections (except for PPPoE connections, I find those evil as well!).</edotorial>

Yep, the data connection is established only when file listing data or file data need to be transferred. The control connection remains connected at all times and is used to send commands to the server and receive replies.

The very fact that there is a reply from the server would indicate that a connection is being established, so I don't think there is a proxy problem here, otherwise there would likely be no connection at all. Actually, I think kiki only mentioned web proxies, in any case. But the change to the Passive FTP setting is a little odd.
