Suddenly crashes right after launch [Lion]
« on: August 18, 2011, 09:32:30 PM »
Hi,

Suddenly my beloved Yummy FTP completely crashes right after launch. I don't even get to see the bookmark window or any other windows, it just gives me the crash report. I restarted my iMac (27", mid 2011,  3,4 GHz Intel Core i7)  a few times, but Yummy crashes consistently. This really happened very suddenly, I've used ir a few hours ago without any problems at all (and use it on a daily basis)

I can't seem to find a way to attach my crash report(s), so I've put them on DropBox. Hope it makes some sense. Any speedy advice would be greatly appreciated, as I'm really at a loss without able to use it :-(

My advice is to always contact me by email for such issues - nobody on the User forum can help and I will always respond faster to emails than I will to forum postings.

Attachments and external links are not allowed due to the huge number of spammers that try to post adverts for ED tablets and porn.

I should be able to untangle the URL you posted, so I'll take a look and get back to you ASAP.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure what to recommend - I've never seen this before. Below is the backtrace from the crash logs (they are all the same crash, btw):

As you can see there is no mention of Yummy FTP code anywhere here... it doesn't even reach the entry point of the Yummy FTP code before it crashes! If any Yummy FTP code was accessed you'd see com.yummysoftware.yummy-ftp in the second column.

So, the OS is crashing loading an app. Great OS upgrade Apple! ... ::)

Try re-installing Yummy. Maybe it got corrupted? It's a long shot, I have to admit.

Otherwise, re-installing 10.7 might be the fix - it could be a 10.7.1 issue.

I will post this crash log on the developer forums to see if any Apple engineers can help with a diagnosis and/or fix. For certain, though, this isn't a Yummy FTP bug if it never even reaches the Yummy FTP code.

Hi JD,

Yes, I tried rebooting a few times and also reinstalled YummyFTP, but to no avail :( Where are Yummy's preferences located? Maybe if I zap those and try to start fresh Yummy will open again. In the meantime I will also do a disk permission repair to check if that helps. Reinstalling 10.7 is a last resort option for me. Let's hope I won't need that  ::)

Edit: Repairing disk permissions didn't help.

I doubt Yummy's preferences file will have anything to do with this, as it's apparently not even reaching the start point of Yummy's application code, but regardless, the file is:

com.yummysoftware.yummy-ftp.plist

and this is located in:

Mac HD -> Users -> yourname -> Library -> Preferences

NOTE: Apple decided that they should hide the Library folder from you in Lion to save any possibility of you damaging the contents by mistake (even though the System folder and Mac HD -> Library folders which contain far more sensitive data are still visible). To access the Library folder you'll need to use Go To Folder in Finder and enter ~/Library

Another thing you could try is to remove the folder:

com.yummysoftware.yummy-ftp

from the Saved Application State folder, which is again inside the invisible Library folder.

The latter *may* be the culprit.

Thanks JD. Really appreciate the help and prompt answers.

Trashing the app saved state didn't help, nor did trashing the preference file. So my only option now is to reinstall OS X 10.7 :(

I think this started when I had to reboot to 32 bits-mode to get another app running (by holding keys 2 and 3 during boot). After rebooting back in normal 64 bits-mode YummyFTP started crashing, although I'm not 100% sure if these correlate. So far this only affected Yummy FTP, so somehow Lion corrupted something which prevents Yummy from even starting or allocating its own code.

And I already used a Terminal command for always keeping the Library folder visible ;) but the additional explanation is most appreciated.

Code: [Select]
chflags nohidden ~/Library/

You're welcome :) I'm just sorry that I don't have any solutions!

That's weird about the 32bit thing... one feature of the 64bit kernel is that it can run both 32bit and 64bit apps at the same time. The only time you would need to force boot it into a 32bit kernel is when you have a kernel extention that is 32bit only - apps are totally unaffected by the kernel bit setting.

So, yes, on the face of it, it would appear that something corrupted your installation by going into 32bit bit kernel and then back again.

Regarding the Library folder, every person I've spoken to with Lion the very first thing they do is un-hide the Library folder. It just goes to prove how pointless this move was on Apple's part.

If you're going to re-install, might I suggest doing a clean install? It's possible the installer won't replace items it thinks are 'okay' so you may end up in the same position.

Can you tell me what it was you installed? Maybe that caused it, so I'd like to test myself...

Was the app "Glims" ?

It appears as an entry in the crash log. Since Yummy uses WebKit for various tasks, which is basically the same API Safari uses to render web pages etc, I wonder if it's broken compatibility.

There is a beta of a Lion compatible version if you look in MacUpdate, but betas are betas for a reason ;)

Reinstalling Lion unfortunately didn't help, so my next move is a clean install. Absolutely not looking forward to completely rearrange my Mac again  >:(

Glims is a Safari add-on to improve upon Safari's features. Uninstalling and restarting didn't help either. I trashed all Yummy's files again, rebooted and downloaded a fresh copy, but I'm seeing the same immediate crash. I'm at a complete loss what to do, except a clean Lion install which I really don't have the time for at the moment.
I'm also completely baffled why Yummy is the only program affected by this.

The "app" where I needed the 32 bit mode for is Logitech's Harmony Remote Control Software (v7.7.0). I would link to the KB article where the 32 bit mode is explained, but you disabled linking so that wouldn't make sense.

Phew. Finally fixed this by restoring an earlier Time Machine backup (had a clear moment  ;D ), without losing too much data. I still don't know if it was the culprit, but I'll make sure to never boot in 32 bits mode again!  >:(

Well thank goodness you're up and running again :)

If you could send me the link via a private message that would be useful. Thanks.

Just as a follow up, did you install Airfoil 4.5.6 from Rogue Amoeba? It's been documeted as causing crashes in other apps, according to a post on their blog.
