How to use EPSV/EPRT?

Does EPSV/EPRT provide any reliability, speed other other transfer improvements?

What is the procedure for using this if you are connecting to a host via the internet through a firewall/router?

EPSV/EPRT is used in special circumstances. It doesn't provide and speed or transfer improvements - it's to support connectivity in certain special environments. Put simply, if you don't know what it is, you don't need it :)
