suggestion: Bookmarks drawer
« on: January 12, 2006, 04:18:40 PM »
after being fed up with Transmit's lack of support/customer service I figured I'd give Yummy FTP a try - especially since it seems to be getting good reviews on Versiontracker, etc.

So far so good, except for the "Maintain modification dates of transferred files" bug which doesn't seem to be working for me.

One suggestion though would be to add the Bookmarks as a drawer similar to the Preview and Queue drawers. Right now I need to keep it open as a separate window and make sure not to close it.

Another oddity, (and maybe because I'm used to Transmit) is that when you disconnect from a server the files still are viewable. I guess I'm used to disconnecting and the window then changing to a new connection window/bookmarks.

Keep up the great work.  Just the fact that you have a Wiki and a Forum is years ahead of Panic's Transmit.

Thanks for giving Yummy a try, and welcome! :)

Since I'm already dealing with your modification date issue via email support, I'll post the result of my suggested fix here when you have confirmed it. If I am correct, the solution is to enable the 'Validate suspect file datestamps' checkbox in the Server Options tab of the Preferences. This is a known issue and is fixed already in a new build which will be released shortly.

The Bookmarks in a side drawer is already being worked on. I hope to include it in the update after next.

The disconnect functionality is indeed different to Transmit as you noted, in that once you disconnect you are presented with input boxes to make a new connection. With Yummy, you can leave the server as-is until you need it - then it will automatically reconnect. So, for example, you could drag files to a folder in the server listing while it is disconnected and Yummy will re-connect and then upload to that folder.

Thanks for the wonderful compliments! I'm working hard to provide everything I can :)

Please note that the modification date issue is now SOLVED: tu11ym0n has found a bug that only shows up when downloading files to a mounted AppleShare volume, rather than to a hard drive in your Mac. This has now been corrected and the fix will be included in the 1.1.6 update.

indeed it has been solved!  :D

Thanks so much for all your hard work and dedication to finding and resolving the issue.

It was definitely the best customer support experience I've ever had with a software company. The kicker is that I wasn't even a paid customer yet!

I am now (and so are my co-workers), and I'm evangelizing everyone I know to switch to Yummy FTP.

I look forward to your future projects and to the continued development of the best FTP client for Mac OS X! :)

Sorry digging up a 5 year old thread  ;D

I've been a long time YummyFTP user and this is one thing that I constantly wished YummyFTP had.  I recently switched to Transmit and really liked it's interface, but went back to Yummy after about a week.  The things I miss from Transmit is it's bookmarks interface, and the ability to have tabs.

Wow, how time flies!

Wonderful to hear you came back to Yummy. That says a lot about what's important in an FTP client ;)

Well I'm sorry about the side drawer for Bookmarks. Although I did investigate it and start some development, it has slipped off my radar, so thanks for reminding me! Tabs are being added for v2.0 which is still under development, and unfortunately still some way off from even being an alpha I'm afraid.

My next distraction (after getting the v1.8.3 update out the door) is the Mac App Store version. Once that's done I can hopefully return to full time 2.0 development!  ;D

Thanks for the update JD!!  Are we better off with the App Store version or the stand alone? Just wondering if the App Store version is more "watered down" or vice versa .

As for the bookmarks shelf, and tabs, I just wanted to express that personally, I'd rather have a more "one-window" experience, rather than multiple independent windows.  It's especially useful if I have multiple sessions open. Thought I'd give you a better reasoning on why these are important to me. And by the sheer amount of views on this topic, I'm sure I'm not alone.  Thanks and keep up the good work!  :D

The one-window concept is definitely what 2.0 is designed around.

Regarding stand-alone vs App Store, I don't plan on making a less capable version nor do I intend to change the price, but it's difficult to say until Yummy actually makes it there. Hopefully I won't be required to remove functionality, although the App Store rules are still maturing, so it's anybody's guess ::)
