Filters & localized folders
« on: December 29, 2006, 05:36:45 AM »
I'm using the French localization of Yummy FTP 1.5.3
While applying Mac filters for transfers and synchronizations, I discovered that filtering items apply to the English names only for the "System" folders, i.e. Desktop / Library / Movies / Pictures... in spite of these folders appear with their localized name in the Mac Browser.
Once uploaded to the server, these folders get an English name in the Server browser  :-[
Any hint ?
Best wishes for 2007  :)

The names of those folders in the UI are for display purposes only. Their real names are "System" etc. To prove this, if you go into Terminal and navigate to the root directory, you'll see the names.

Thanks  :)
So, that means that if I want to exclude the folder named "Images" (automatically named "Images" by my French localization of Tiger) from the Synchronisation, I must apply the filtering item "Exclude Mac items whose name is Photos".

And if I want to exclude the folder named "Séquences", I must go into Terminal, find out that the actual name is "Movies", come back to Yummy and apply "Exclude Mac items whose name is Movies".
That's not very handy, since the Mac browser displays "Images" and "Séquences" folders, not "Photos" and "Movies" folders...  ;)

Yes, that's correct, and I agree it is not very handy, but there are very few of these special localized folders and the number of people wanting to filter them is probably quite low. I'm not sure it's worthwhile investing the time and effort needed to make special arrangements for these few items at the moment, although I agree it would be a nice enhancement to make this transparent to the user. I'll take a look at what would be required.

I wouldn't have thought it was worth the effort. Just complicates your coding. How many users will want to filter out "Desktop" or "Library"? Normal use will be focussed on transferring or synchronizing folders well away from those folders, so there shouldn't be any need to filter them out. In fact I can't imagine a situation where it would be needed.  Makes me wonder whether Old Salt is setting things up correctly/efficiently: perhaps (s)he is navigating to a folder by starting with the Desktop listing and using the hierarchical display, rather than double-clicking to open a folder listing in its own window. Just a thought!

I agree, but Old Salt is actually Jean-Louis, the French localizer of Yummy FTP, so he isn't a newbie ;) I assume he has a valid need for this.
