"blocked myself" from my website??
« on: February 05, 2008, 07:10:15 PM »
 Hi,

I tried accessing files from a server last night using Yummy for the first time. I have done it successfully on a PC using different software, but wish to do it on my iMac running 10.4   I was unsuccessful in logging on, even though I had my user name and password, plus a private key.   I got a message "your private key is not private enough..." and it would not let me go any further.

Since attempting to log in to my server, I can no longer access the web site with any browser from that computer. I am on my iBook now and can access the site,  and also did so at work on a PC. But I get a message "server is not responding" on the iMac's Safari and IE.

Can I have inadvertantly "blocked myself" from even reading my web site?

thanks, I am going from memory and I am sure you will want more details to help.

You need to speak with your web hosting provider to see what is wrong with your web site and/or FTP server

Certainly, there is no way that Yummy FTP could possibly have anything to do with this, since you didn't even manage to connect to your site using it.

How is it that I can view the web site with any other computer, like my other Mac with Safari, just not the one that I put Yummy on?

Very strange, but very probably using Yummy FTP is totally coincidental. I mean, all Yummy does is open a connection to your server, nothing unusual about that... and in this case, it didn't even get properly connected, so I don't see how it could possibly cause such a problem.

Have you tried obvious things like restarting the problematic Mac?

Have you contacted your hosting provider to ask them exactly what their cryptic server message means?

I have:

Deleted Safari's preferences
Restarted the Mac
Logged on as another user
tried to see the site with Internet Explorer and Opera

I have:
Viewed the web site on another Mac at the very same time I could not with the iMac
Viewed the web site with a PC
Accessed the server files with a PC FTP client and exchanged files with it.

This problem occured 5 minutes after installing Yummy and trying to use it for the first time.

Do you have a firewall? Perhaps it is blocking your connection for some reason. Similarly, if you have Little Snitch installed and access to the address is blocked then this is the result you'll get. Even Mac OS X has a built-in firewall, so that is something to consider too.

Something like the above seems quite likely to be the problem, since blocking would usually be done on the address, not the protocol - trying to browse the web site is entirely different and not at all related to the FTP protocol which Yummy FTP uses, nor the SFTP protocol, which is an entirely different protocol again, so I really don't see any way that Yummy FTP could have affected web browsing.

Have you contacted the hosting people to ask them about the strange server message and about this problem? Perhaps they can see something useful at their end.

The only other thing I can suggest to totally eliminate a fault with software (which includes the OS itself as well as any other software you might have installed, including Yummy) is quite drastic - erase the hard drive and re-install the OS  :o

For what it's worth, I understand your frustration, and I am sorry for that, but there are no other reports of such a problem with Yummy. I get all sorts of reports, sometimes about the tiniest little things, so I am certain that if anyone had experienced this issue before I would know about it.
