New feature "Open As Web URL" in 1.7.3b0 rocks !
« on: August 21, 2008, 12:25:08 AM »

Hello Jason,

I am very happy with the new feature, it works as expected :-)

Best,
Wim

PS: Is it possible to link the new feature to a button ?

PS2:
I am really getting spoiled with this new feature, now I wish that there will be a feature (option) that double click on any type of file (specified in a list) this file directly opens in my webbrowser so there is no need anymore to select the "Open As Web URL" option form the menu.
With this option the behavior of YummyFTP is then exactly the same as in WebDAV

EDIT: PS

Hi Wim!

Glad to hear you like it Smiley

All the best,
Jason

PS : A toolbar icon and/or double click action option would be possible to add.

I'll see what I can do.

I think I've gotten into a pickle. I started experimenting... was confronted with a dialog to manually add the server name, including the protocol. It SEEMED that I had to do that each time I re-launched Yummy (I quit and relaunched to see if the server-name persisted, it did not). Was getting ready to kvetch.

Thought I'd make some more experiments. The next time, I left off the protocol, just used the server address. So that gave me a protocol less URL... OK. Then wondered about ftp (as in ftp://). Relaunched it and guess what? No more dialog... it seems to permanently of the server-name/path to file without any protocol.

So now I'm stuck. Can I recover (i.e. is it in the bookmark of Prefs?)? Is the design meant to permanently recall the protocol and server address for that bookmark?

I'm not quite sure about some of what you're describing here means, but the New Connection window shows automatically if you have the option 'Automatically shown New Connection window' enabled in the Interface panel of the Preferences.

The settings you enter into the New Connection window are not remembered across launches. It's meant to be a 'start point' where you can enter new connection settings, select the settings of a recently connected server, or choose a Bonjour-advertised server.

Was following the topic of the thread, about the new functionality of "Copy/Open as Web URL."

Now it SEEMS the address it asked me for is being stored in the bookmark... but this morning, Copy As works (without the protocol... looks like I need to recreate the bookmark) but Open As does not. Open As does switch to my open web browser, but the UL is not passed along.

Oh! Sorry Embarrassed I didn't get what you meant...

Ok, the the 'web url' setting is stored in your Bookmark. Select 'Show All Bookmarks' from the Bookmarks menu, select your Bookmark from the list shown, then click the Edit toolbar icon. At the bottom of the editor window is the Web URL setting. You can add in the protocol there (I specifically left out automatically adding a protocol in case some people didn't want it).

Hello paulc,

When I started using YummyFTP I also experienced some difficulties entering the proper URL of my webspace.

At that time I only worked with Aliases and not with Bookmarks so for me editing the path in the Bookmarks was not an option.
I therefore deleted the Alias. I logged on and make sure that I navigated to the home(root) of my webspace, I selected the index.html file and choose the menu option "Copy as Web URL".
The application asked me for the URL (one time) and I entered the URL of my domainname NO LINKS ALLOWEDNO LINKS ALLOWEDdmmdh.nl and then the index.html file was properly copied.
When using the configured Alias, regardless how deep I go inside the website hierarchy all URL's are now having the proper path.
So my advice is to start with the home/root and then all will work well.

Best,

Wim

Good to be on the same page there JD. As I better understand the interface, I probably saw the dialog I first spoke of for both the bookmark AND by using the FTP Alias I keep on my desktop.

So now I see that it's my alias that has a lack of protocol. The bookmark does, the alias does not. AND the alias has NOT been modified since 07, so that little bit of data is housed... where?

However, at some point I DID see a message about having/needing to edit the alias... I was too quick to dismiss it and for the life of me I can't seem to figure out HOW I got such a message!

Far as I know, one can NOT edit an existing FTP Alias... right?

I just re-created the alias from my bookmark and it DOES do a correct and proper Web URL.

Wim, welcome to the Yummy world! Best to have an existing bookmark that one makes INTO an FTP Alias to. That way, one can easily recreate the alias with new data IN the bookmark. Now I see it is driven from a pref in the bookmark... one that COULD seem to point to a different domain than what the bookmark goes to.

Both FTP Aliases and FTP Watchers have Bookmarks embedded into them. The Bookmark settings can be edited as follows:

Select 'Show All Bookmarks' from the Bookmarks menu
Click the Edit toolbar icon - a file chooser window will appear
Navigate to and select your FTP Alias / FTP Watcher
Edit as though it were a normal Bookmark
Click Save when finished

Does that help? Smiley

Hello Jason,

Thanks for the info how to change the embedded Bookmarks settings of an FTP Alias.
I tried it and it works fine.

Q) Although I registrated Yummy a long time ago I had to enter my name and registration key again before I got access to the Alias bookmarks, is this normal for a new beta ?

Best,
Wim

No, you should never need to re-enter the registration information unless you move computers or re-install Mac OS X.

Are you sure it wasn't the Keychain access verification window? That will happen when you change versions of Yummy FTP, and that is expected behavior.

Hello Jason,

Thanks for the info about the registration behavior of Yummy.
No I am sure that I got a message right after clicking on the Edit Bookmark button that this function was only available for registered users, and only after entering the key stuff (menu option) I got access.
This is the only time ever I got the message, so perhaps it was just a glitch and a bad behavior of my computer OS or a User error ;-)

Best,
Wim

Does that help? Smiley

Indeed (actually, now that you mention it, I actually recall getting the same answer a while ago...  it must have been stored in some of my dead brain cells).

Same for a Secure FTP Alias I assume...

How hard would it be to have FTL Aliases be listed in the "show all bookmarks" dialog (with an error trap for location that brings up a GetFile DLOG if it isn't on the original path)?

Now that I grok the UI, original post is on the money, the feature rocks!

Good Smiley I thought I'd mentioned it before...

No, Secure FTP Alias cannot be edited. They are locked for good once created, which is part of what makes them 'secure'

Adding FTP Aliases to the Show All Bookmarks window is not a simple task because FTP Aliases could be resident absolutely anywhere on your hard drive. I could attempt to track them, but it could/would be easily broken.

Don't track 'em, make the user find 'em if he/she/it moved 'em! BUT save the location when they do.

All things being equal, I'd rather have the tabbed interface<g>!
