FTP Alias New Feature?

While I can't say that I have specific info a transfer made by an FTP Alias didn't work, or only transferred some but not all files I find myself wondering about such issues. Part of this is brought on by seeing the progress dialog seem to do the last 25% of the files go in 5% of the time. Makes me nervous.

Is there any mechanism in the ftp protocol that verifies that all files dropped onto it were transferred? Isn't there some form of ACK sent back when each file is transferred?

I'm thinking about some form of optional pref that will post a notice at the end verifying x number of files had been successfully transferred... something along those lines.

Yummy has supported that for a long time.

I also have a 'To Do' on my list to add proper logging, so you could verify transfers succeeded by reading a log file.

Perhaps my impression of Growl is incorrect... in this situation, wouldn't it just be that the FTP Alias had run... not that files were successfully transferred??

Now a log file WOULD be very useful...

No, the whole point is that Growl notifies you when the upload is completed. So this should be ideal for you

How come Growl puts up a blank application icon and not the FTP Alias' one?

So I made my secure FTP Aliases w/b9. Mixed bag.

Dock icon MUCH better, seems to have a spinning transfer gizmo, nice.

BUT, GROWL  still shows a blank application icon. PLUS, it seems installing the 4.0b Safari wipes GROWLS prefs totally (it wouldn't even load after the re-boot). PLUS, sometimes it will list the files in the folder uploaded, sometimes just the folder name. Now I know this ain't your  fault, but the reliability factor is about in the toilet... SO I heartily  encourage quickly implementing the logging function you mentioned.

The problem with the icon is odd - definitely either an OS or Growl issue. Try copying (not moving) an FTP Alias to the Applications folder and then double click it, as this can sometimes cause a refresh of the icon association display.

For the issues with the reported name, what I think you're seeing is that some of the Growl notification styles have a limit of up to 5 lines of text. Others have an option to remove the limitation. Certainly, in my testing with a unlimited line display, Growl shows the exact list of items that were uploaded.

Another thing occurs as I use the newly made droplets... they seem a whole lot slower overall. As in from dropping the files to seeing the progress dialog... that period of time seems a lot longer than before.

Hmm, since I didn't change any code for FTP Alias processing other than the Dock icon issue you raised, I don't see how it could be slower.

Could you re-download 1.7.2 and create an FTP Alias with it so you can actually compare it with one from 1.7.3b9 ?

I'll get one from my backup and run it against the b9 made one... nothing substantively changed on the machine I am using it on (a 10.4.11 PPC G5).

Ok, I've tested out FTP Alias speed in b9 and all my tests result in an immediate upload without any delay. I don't see any indications of slow down.

If you still find evidence that there is a slow down, please refine the details:

1. Secure or Standard FTP Alias
2. FTP or SFTP
3. Measured slow down areas of execution

Definite bug here! It's a secure ftp alias, doing standard ftp. The b9 made one takes about 10 seconds to show it's progress window and start connecting. The prior one takes less than 2 seconds to get to the same point. I was testing with half a dozen 4-800k image files. That same prior one transferred all the files and quit before the new one even showed the progress dialog!

Actual transfer speeds seemed to be roughly the same.
