Using Mac-Filter with Date confusing
« on: December 03, 2009, 01:20:29 PM »

To start with, Yummy is an excellent piece of cake, sorry, software.
I have used WinSCP (often quoted) and grown fond of it, but when changing to the Mac world was glad to encounter Yummy. I can hardly think of anything that I miss. Well done!

A suggestion of mine, though.
When using the Mac filter "File is not older than [date]" it works perfectly, OK.
However, I find it confusing that only the folder containing a changed file will display without red cross.
Even more, if the option "Apply to: Transfer" (I'm translating this back into English, it's the second check box), nothing will be transferred to the server if one happens to pick a folder that is two levels or more away from the changed file(s).
Now, the situation I often encounter is that a number of classes have changed somewhere, and even if I knew where, I'd hate to open all the subfolders and pick individual files by hand.
To my mind, it would make more sense to pass the flag "contains changed item" all the way up, so that it's easier to find changed files in the first place and to select the top folder for upload and have only files uploaded that actually meet the criteria.

Could that be done?
So far I end up uploading the whole structure.

Cheers,
Marcus

Firstly, Thank You for your kind comments! Smiley

Am I mistaken, or are you trying to re-create the Synchronize feature using the Filters for some reason? That feature is specifically designed to automatically find the changed items and upload (or download) only those items.

For the X icon display issue, the problem is that in order for the X to display in the folder Yummy would have to know that a sub item met the filter criteria. That's fine, except it would make it compulsory to fetch the entire sub-folder hierarchy and examine every item inside in order to determine that. On your Mac that could be relatively fast, unless there are deeply nested sub folders, and/or 1000s of items. On the Server side it would end up with Yummy just constantly fetching directory listings, and not to mention all the CPU that it would take to perform such a task. For an icon display, I think it's too much Smiley

Not at all, you deserve them (the kind comments)  Cheesy

"That feature is specifically designed to automatically find the changed items and upload (or download) only those items."
That is exactly what I use it for (upload only).
Synchronizing would be an option, but I'm too timid to use it. I prefer the one-way mechanism.

I understand the problem for the server side, but for the Mac side such a feature would be really helpful.
But I suppose you'll consider it inconsistent to provide the service just for one side.  Cry

Perhaps I'll have to make friends with the Synchronize feature.

Thanks for your prompt answer.

Don't be afraid Smiley

The Synchronize feature has separate Upload, Download and Upload + Download modes, namely Update Server, Update Mac and Mirror respectively.

Also, the feature has a Preview option, enabled by default, which will show you the items which would be transferred before they actually do, thereby allowing you to back out completely if you wish, amongst other options. You will specifically need to confirm the list of changed items before anything will happen.

I just took up your suggestion of trying the Synchronization feature.

It seems to me that the "process sub-directories" option simply does not work.
I have the latest version (1.8.1) and I'm running under Snow Leopard.

I've followed the instructions of the manual - is there anything I could have missed?

Best regards,

I just tested a sync with the 'process' option enabled, then disabled. It's definitely considering sub directories when enabled and not when it is disabled.

What are you seeing?
