Title: YummyFTP Universal Binary
Post by: Andreas on January 28, 2006, 02:07:18 PM
I'm sure you knew that sooner or later somebody would ask. ;)

I'm happily typing this on my new iMac Intel Core Duo and of course I had to give YummyFTP a try. It works nicely under Rosetta; no problems at all. Still, a native version would definitely rock. If you've got a universal beta that needs to be tested, I'll gladly do that.

Best Regards,

Andreas

Yes, I was kinda waiting for that :) I don't have an Intel build yet, I'm afraid, much less an Intel machine to test it on. Thanks for the offer, though... I'll get there as soon as I can.

Has there been anymore progress on a universal version? Rosetta is a drag...

I'm available to test any builds if you need.

No. When there's an Intel build ready for a test I'll post a message here to invite beta testing. For what it's worth, making an Intel version of Yummy isn't just a case of enabling a checkbox in Xcode... there's a lot more work involved. If Apple had stuck to their promised schedule of delivery for Intel Macs then I would have been ready, but as you know, they're six months ahead of schedule.

In any case, I'd already planned to release a new version of Yummy with new functionality and a few bug fixes in the near term. After that I will be concentrating on the Intel build.

As far as Rosetta is concerned, I'm interested to hear where you think there is a problem with Yummy FTP. From the feedback I've had from the two Yummy FTP users with Intel Macs (so far) there don't appear to be any problems, although a very slight transfer speed degradation on high speed networks was noted.

Thanks for the update on it, I was just curious about how far out it might be.

Fortunately Yummy itself works fine in Rosetta, no issues there. I just try to avoid running apps that need Rosetta because it's a resource hog (mainly a memory hog).

Anyways, since I haven't said it yet, you've done a great job on YummyFTP. It's undoubtedly the best FTP app I've ever seen.

Ok to give you rough guesstimate of when I think it will be ready for testing, I think "a few weeks" is a reasonable expectation.

Thanks for the nice comments about Yummy's progress so far :) The latest build (in beta) includes some nice new things, which should at least keep you happy while I work on the Intel build... ;)

Yummy FTP is now building as a Universal Binary. Yay! :)

Don't get over excited yet, though - I have a fair bit of byte swapping to do and that's a long and tedious job, especially when I don't yet have an Intel Mac to test with...  ::)

But the good news is that I managed to scrape together the funds to get a Mac Mini Intel Core Solo! Should arrive next week sometime. ;D

I just wanted to add that although I've said previously that I would make another PowerPC-only release before working on the Universal Binary of Yummy FTP, I've made such good progress so far that I'm going to go back on that - the next release of Yummy FTP will be a Universal Binary.

Sheesh, next thing we'll know is that he'll rewrite it as a winblowz app... meant to run under virtualization in Leopard... AND sell to the CuteFTP market! ;D

demental: I have Yummy running natively on my shiny new Intel Mac Mini ;D

There are some issues to clear up, but on the whole it's working very well, and very fast!

I expect to be able to provide a Universal Binary beta within the next few days or so... Stay tuned!

That is very good news !
The bad one is your forum email notification does not seem to do its job. I guess you'll have to fix this after the UB release is out ...  ;D

Thanks, demental. So far, everyone who has tried the UB has been impressed with the speed improvements and reports no problems whatsoever. Very encouraging :)

Thanks for emailing me about the universal beta Jason! I wasn't expecting it so soon.

The performance really is impressive. No show stopping issues - though I haven't tinkered with it too much yet. Great work!

After testing the Universal Binary beta for more than a month, I still haven't found any new bugs. Heck, I couldn't even find the old ones. ;)

Way to go!
