Title: New Buttons sets
Post by: Axelvak on June 14, 2007, 05:27:03 PM
I'd like, if possible, that in one  of the future release of Yummy FTP that we'd be given the choice of changing the buttons sets. It the only thing that bothers me about this software, everything else just being great.

What is it about the buttons that bothers you? (I assume you are referring to the toolbar icons?)

It's unlikely I would add a feature such as you have suggested, but as it happens, I've been considering getting a complete re-design of all the icons by a professional designer - most of them are made by myself, you see.

Yes I'm refferring to this ones :
(NO LINKS ALLOWEDpix.nofragNO LINKS ALLOWED/d8/f3/75176a083129c7cf4ae94be30d8c.jpeg)

The icons on the left don't minimize even with "use small icons" picked.
And I (don't take it wrong, I like the  rest of your work) don't like the icons, they dont fit in the rest of the design of the software.

Works for me. Can't wait to see it.

The mini size option is a known limitation. These are custom buttons, hand built by me. For what it's worth, they look a lot better when you turn off the metal windows, which are largely out of favor these days and therefore no longer the default 'look' of Yummy. I do agree that the remaining icons are a different style, though.

All I need to do is find a good icon designer, who won't require me to re-mortgage my house for payment ;)

Does any one have any recommendations on that front?

Thanks for the feedback! :)

Well, there are the superstars of the Mac dev and design world:
- Jon Hicks (NO LINKS ALLOWEDNO LINKS ALLOWEDhicksdesign.co.uk/)
- Veerle Pieters (NO LINKS ALLOWEDveerle.duohNO LINKS ALLOWED/)
- Louie Mantia (NO LINKS ALLOWEDlouiemantiaNO LINKS ALLOWED/)
- Laurent (NO LINKS ALLOWEDave.ambitiouslemonNO LINKS ALLOWED/)

Of course, you could always hold a contest, awarding the winner free upgrades until 3.0.

Thanks, but the problem with these is that although these designers are very talented, they are also very expensive and very sought after. So, first I will need to wait for one to become available (assuming they will even consider taking on my app) and then I will need to make an appointment with my bank manager to arrange for the re-mortgage to pay for the icons  ;D

I have actually contacted a couple of these people before regarding icon design for Yummy. But I never even received a reply... I guess I am not worthy  :'(

Eeek, she REALLY needs to do something with that site... it looks like the only work she does is that 20+ year old stuff. I'm surprised...

so if the pwd is in the keychain, why not go view it in keychain access utility?

What's that got to do with new button sets?  :-\

Wrong topic?

I don' know either  :D

I think Jim was replying to the 'show passwords in cleartext' thread, but somehow it got into here.

FWIW, I agree with Jim, but to be clear - the feature requesters are asking for a way to access the keychain to show the passwords via Yummy rather than having to go to the trouble of finding Keychain Access, then finding the right entry, then showing the password ... they are asking for a single step solution.

I am using the Graphite Transmit icons from Adam Betts (NO LINKS ALLOWEDNO LINKS ALLOWEDartofadambettsNO LINKS ALLOWED/weblog/?p=100). I had to replicate one of the buttons myself. The rest of the icons I just haven't had time come up with my own version.

Well ...

I am already in talks with someone who might come up with a good replacement set all of our own :)

Don't really know why I'm jumping into this conversation, could I really have nothing else to do?? :)  For what it's worth I don't think your icons really are any better or worse than anything else--except for Sno Navigator on the Camino browser. those are cool!  I wouldn't pay a pile of money for anything that's probably better left hidden in the interests of screen real estate and efficiency.  That's what the menu bar and keyboard is for.

Cheers,
Dave

Well I'll jump in with you. I totally agree. I hate icons as I never know what they stand for. Even the most beautifully designed icon is no match for a single word. Where possible I turn off icons and use text. Where I can't turn them off I waste valuable seconds trying to find which icon to click to do a specific job. "Is it this curly one here with the arrow? Let me hover and wait for the tool tip to tell me... Oh no, that's something else. OK, let's try this red and green one .. wait for the tool tip... !!"

I don't even like using the standard ones. "I think that's the Print icon, but it could be Print All or Print One Page, I had better check... No, I'll use the menu."  or  "Is that icon Save or Save As or Save a Copy?  I'll use the menu/keyboard, thanks."

In my own software I refuse to use icons. They just slow everyone down in my opinion. It's become a fashion. In fact I'm looking at a whole host of icons now: in the Post section of this forum. I haven't the faintest idea what most of them mean until the tool tip shows up, and I'll bet most users don't either.

So JD get rid of all icons, except maybe for the trash can. Save yourself both cost and real estate.
Cheers, J

Well, mostly I kind of agree with you both, but what you have to remember is that one of the big things about the Mac is that it's gorgeous to look at... all that eye candy (iCandy™ ?)... people love it! So if there's an app which doesn't have the highly polished look then it tends to stick out like a sore thumb. Although you and I love Yummy because of its capabilities, people looking at it for the first time might be put off by a sub-standard appearance. First impressions, and all that. While I agree that my icons aren't all that terrible (I've seen a LOT worse) they aren't anywhere near as nice as they could be. Take Panic's Transmit icon as an example.

I've had the "your icons suck" message rammed down my feedback email account so many times now, I'm getting a little sick - now is the time to put paid to those complaints, even if my wallet is screaming "Nooooooo!"

Oddly enough, just another example of the 'icon problem' came up the other day:

Maybe ....

But if you didn't have any icons, then no one would say they were poor  ;)

There are other ways of making an app look nice. But you're probably right, first impressions and all that...

Gawd, what a bunch of fuddy duddies you lot are. (I can say this because you're my forum buddies/mates and I'm allowed to poke fun at you and you won't take offence - right?)

I lub pretty icons. I maximise my screen real estate and minimise my visual boredom by keeping them small and captionless. Bring on the re-design, can't wait to see the new icons. =)
