Title: Really happy with Yummy FTP, few suggestions
Post by: stoptime on March 08, 2006, 09:52:02 AM
Hey all,

I'm really enjoying using this program. In particular, the column view and the drastic cut in processor use compared to Fetch. For me, those alone are the reasons to make the switch. I'd just like to toss a few suggestions into the pot:

1. I don't seem to retain any history with column view.
2. It'd be nice to be able to copy items, just like to you in the finder, wo/ having to duplicate them first.
3. Support for true server-to-server transfers (handy for those HUGE files).
4. Someone else mentioned a bookmark drawer, that'd be especially nice with a tabbed interface.

Great work folks, thanks!

Hi Matt,

Great to hear you're appreciating Yummy FTP :) I also love to get suggestions, so thank you!

1. Do you mean from the Back/Forward buttons? If so, it's just the way it is implemented in Yummy FTP at the moment. I have an existing 'to do' on my list to make column view behave more like the Finder in some respects, this included.

2. If you mean by holding the Alt key down so that you get the + cursor, then yes I agree that it would make sense to add that. Someone else asked for this recently, so that's two votes for it already.

3. FXP (File eXchange Protocol) to do true server to server is planned for the future, but it gets pretty messy when dealing with complete directory structures, which is the main reason it's not been implemented yet. As an interim solution I might be able to add FXP for single file transfers, though - it would certainly help with those huge files  ;)

4. Tabs are planned for the future, too

Hey Jason,

No, with the history, I mean the History from the Listing menu. It doesn't seem to do anything - all I use is column view.

FXP for single files would be great - I just gzipped up an 800mb file and had to move it to another server. That's actually how I found Yummy, because Fetch kept choking on it and I'd have to start all over, so I searched for an FTP program that would pick up where it left off in the event something happened mid-transfer. It literally took all day, but at least Yummy finished the job :)

The History menu is supposed to show each folder you've visited either by double clicking (in List view) or CMD-down arrow (in Column view). If this menu isn't being populated, it could be that you're not using a Bookmark? The history gets saved in your Bookmark, so if you don't have one then the History will be lost when you close the connection window.

Anyhow, I'm glad to hear Yummy succeeded where others failed. That's one of Yummy's strong points - getting the job done, no matter what.

How far or soon into the future?

I'm wanting to purchase an FTP client, and discovered Yummy, and have 14 days left on the trial period.
Having tabs or opening multiple windows/sessions is extremely useful.  To be honest, I don't know if I can open multiple windows in Yummy, but it that feature exists, I'm about to go find and use it.

Congratulations on all the great ratings you have at VersionTracker.

Firstly, yes - you can open multiple windows in Yummy, either to different servers or the same server and drag and drop between the windows. Just open more connections using the Bookmarks you have created, or use the New Connection window.

I'm aiming to add tab capability for the next major update after the upcoming release.

Thanks!
