Title: Multiple Remote Editor's for different file type extensions Post by: nicksageek on November 03, 2005, 11:35:07 PM The new version 1.1.5 is great!
I've been meaning to ask if there was a way to add multiple editors for different file types. For instance BBedit for .php, .html, .js etc... Then a different editor like CSSEdit for .css file extensions. This would be really useful for remote editing. Thanks for everything! The new FTP Watcher is great! What you're after is already present! Although I have to admit I would like to make it simpler to configure in a future version. You need to select the Suffix Mapping table from the Transfer menu. In there you will see just about every known file name extension, with separate transfer controls for each. For each one you can specify an editor application - look at the Helper Application section at the bottom, and the 'Use as default editor' checkbox. Thanks for the quick reply!

I was just about to suggest the very same feature as I am currently on the fence between BBEdit and TextMate. I have been using BBEdit for ages but there are a few things I really like about TextMate. However certain functions are much better in BBEdit (find/replace, compare 2 front documents) so that there are certain times that I need to open up a particular file in BBEdit. I'm really glad to see there is an option to do this by suffix mapping, but what I'd really like to be able to do is define several different editors and be able to select which editor when clicking on the Edit icon in the toolbar. Maybe the Edit icon is a folder which when clicked reveals a menu of all defined editors? My current workflow is TextMate for most coding, StyleMaster for CSS, and BBEdit for find/replace/diff. So while I can map .php to TextMate there are occasions when I'll need to open up a PHP file in BBEdit for find/replace/diff. Any way to accommodate this? Title: Re: Multiple Remote Editor's for different file type extensions Post by: JD on June 09, 2006, 05:52:24 AM Currently, the only way is via the Edit With... option from the Menubar or contextual menu. I guess it would make sense to extend the current Edit toolbar icon to display a dropdown menu with other editors you've configured if you click on the Edit toolbar icon and hold the mouse down... a single click will open with the default editor, as it does now. Sound good?
Title: Re: Multiple Remote Editor's for different file type extensions Post by: tu11ym0n on June 09, 2006, 09:36:21 AM sounds great! I had envisioned that it would work similarly to the Favorites and History folder icons in the toolbar. Maybe by default the default editor is selected so as not to annoy users who only use one editor?

Title: Re: Multiple Remote Editor's for different file type extensions Post by: lehmkuhl on June 10, 2006, 10:00:02 AM First off, thanks for a great piece of software. And thanks as well for the amazing support you give it with responding to feature requests and user issues.
My current workflow is a lot like tu11ym0n. TextMate for most editing, BBEdit for diff'ing. What would be really handy for me would be a key command for "Edit in secondary editor..." (Cmd-Shift-E maybe?). You'd probably also need to extend the preferences to allow a secondary editor to be defined. Something like this would save me a lot of time, since I'm constantly navigating my way down to BBEdit in the "Edit with..." contextual menu. Thanks. Title: Re: Multiple Remote Editor's for different file type extensions Post by: JD on June 10, 2006, 02:08:08 PM That sounds useful. Others, who might stick with one editor for text, could define the second editor as one for graphics editing. That would fit nicely - thanks for the suggestion :)
Title: Re: Multiple Remote Editor's for different file type extensions Post by: tu11ym0n on June 12, 2006, 12:58:32 PM lehmkuhl nailed it on the head. I was just about to follow up my previous suggestion with another idea borrowed from Dreamweaver. Dreamweaver allows you to preview in browser by hitting F12 and previewing in an alternate browser by hitting shift-F12. It would be great if YummyFTP could mirror this functionality but apply it to editors, i.e., F12 opens the file in the default editor and shift-F12 opens the file in the alternate editor.
Title: Re: Multiple Remote Editor's for different file type extensions Post by: JD on June 13, 2006, 04:28:13 AM Sounds good to me, except I would steer clear of the Function keys (Apple likes them for Dashboard, Expose, etc) and use the Cmd-E and Shift-Cmd-E shortcuts instead.
Title: Re: Multiple Remote Editor's for different file type extensions Post by: tu11ym0n on June 13, 2006, 11:15:13 PM sweet! :D
Title: Re: Multiple Remote Editor's for different file type extensions Post by: spacific on July 03, 2006, 03:45:28 AM Or of course you could use Return and Shift-Return (see my other post ;)).
Title: Re: Multiple Remote Editor's for different file type extensions Post by: JD on September 05, 2006, 03:48:09 PM Ok here's what I did:
I made use of the 'Edit With' menu - each entry in that menu now has a keyboard shortcut, starting with Cntrl-Cmd-0 through Cntrl-Cmd-9 So, now you can have up to 10 alternative editors available at your fingertips. Good? ;D Title: Re: Multiple Remote Editor's for different file type extensions Post by: spacific on September 30, 2006, 12:35:56 AM Works well! You have to add your main editor to the list of alternative editors (which seems a bit odd), but once done, the system works well. Exercises the little finger as well.
(BTW, what has happened to smileys? On my system they have all been replaced by words, even the ones just above this edit box. Or is it just me?) Title: Re: Multiple Remote Editor's for different file type extensions Post by: JD on September 30, 2006, 03:52:38 AM The Edit With list is meant to be a list of alternative editors, which is why the default editor isn't listed. The default editor has a keyboard shortcut all of its own. In any case, great to hear it's working well for you!
The smileys seem to work fine for me... :) ;) :D ;D >:( :( :o 8) ??? ::) :P :-[ :-X :-\ :-* :'( .... anybody else have a problem? Title: Re: Multiple Remote Editor's for different file type extensions Post by: spacific on September 30, 2006, 07:12:11 AM Yes, that's true. Thanks.
Still no smileys. Is it my settings? I can't see any settings that are relevant, except that below under "additional options" as I write this: but the "don't use smileys" is not selected. Title: Re: Multiple Remote Editor's for different file type extensions Post by: JD on September 30, 2006, 12:00:27 PM Odd. Maybe Something Bad™ is cached in your browser? If you're using Safari, select 'Empty Cache' from the Safari menu, quit Safari and restart it. Other browsers have similar options.
Title: Re: Multiple Remote Editor's for different file type extensions Post by: spacific on September 30, 2006, 07:10:27 PM Ah! Problem solved. Smileys are back. It was Firefox: About a week ago I (yes, my fault!) had turned on "Load images, for the originating website only" in order to cut down on advertising content. I see that the smileys come from www.yummyftp.com rather than www.yummysoftware.com, hence the non-load.
Thanks anyway. Sorry about the off-topic. Cheers. Title: Re: Multiple Remote Editor's for different file type extensions Post by: JD on October 01, 2006, 04:28:12 AM Ah... ok now I understand. I'll see if I can fix that up on my end. Thanks for the info!
