Title: Folder Size? Post by: paulc on April 23, 2006, 01:43:57 PM Not sure if it's been brought up before, but "display folder size" for both local and remote sure would be nice...
Title: Re: Folder Size? Post by: JD on April 23, 2006, 02:29:16 PM Already in the upcoming beta release... :)
Title: Re: Folder Size? Post by: paulc on April 25, 2006, 08:46:33 AM Oh, I LOVE THIS SOFTWARE! ;D
Title: Re: Folder Size? Post by: paulc on May 19, 2006, 09:37:31 AM Hmmm, not to be a spoil-sport, but it doesn't seem to be in b4... or am I missing something?
Title: Re: Folder Size? Post by: JD on May 22, 2006, 07:34:30 PM You're missing something... ;)
A Calculate Size option is available from the File menu, and from the Contextual menu. Title: Re: Folder Size? Post by: paulc on May 24, 2006, 08:38:29 AM Oh... I guess my expectation was along the lines of a pref that allows one to turn on and off folder size calculations (i.e. some don't have fast internet connections).
The good news is that I can select all and calculate! And it works on the server and local side. Perhaps you might consider a pref for a future version? Title: Re: Folder Size? Post by: JD on May 24, 2006, 09:43:05 AM Well, I never thought for it to work like that .... what did you say about great minds? :D
In all honesty, though, would you really want it to automatically start fetching all the listing data for every single directory just so it can calculate and display the sizes? Surely it makes sense just to fetch all that data on demand, no? Title: Re: Folder Size? Post by: paulc on May 25, 2006, 05:30:59 PM That's why I mentioned a pref... user choice.
20 folders, 878 "items," 30 MBs and it takes around 25 seconds to calculate. OTOH, I'm curious about what functions in ftp are asynchronous? i.e. what "other stuff" can be going on while calculations are being retrieved? Title: Re: Folder Size? Post by: JD on May 26, 2006, 06:03:16 AM Just about everything can be executed asynchronously in Yummy FTP - it's not down to the protocol itself, since this is entirely synchronous, but since Yummy uses several connections at once it can use those resources to perform many tasks at once, calculating folder sizes included. If, however, a server is limited to only allowing one connection at a time then this automatic folder size calculation would block any other actions until completed - not what you want.
There's no technical reason why this capability couldn't be added, but certainly, a preference would be in order if this automatic behavior is something that others would like also. Votes please!
