Title: Bookmarks suggestion
Post by: guttyguppy on May 17, 2006, 08:59:51 PM
Hi, I'm getting used to hitting apple-2 to quick connect to my personal site, but then I add a new bookmark and apple-2 now takes me to what used to be apple-1. So...can bookmarks be appended to the end of the list, rather than the beginning?

Actually, the Bookmarks menu lists the Bookmarks alphabetically and the first 10 entries get a CMD-N key associated with them automatically.

One way to order the list is to add space characters to the front of the Bookmark names, forcing them to be sorted higher alphabetically.

However, I've had it requested in the past that the CMD key could be manually assigned to each Bookmark. I guess I should add this ... but since I'm nearly ready to release the next update, I'll have to delay doing this until the next one.

Gotcha, so the new site I added began with an A and that's why it went to the top. It'd be nice to have the option as you add them they just get appended to the end though. I really liked that the apple- automatically worked, without me having to assign everything (I hate assigning key commands because I'm lazy)

I'll see what I can come up with ;)

It would be quite unique methinks to be able to order the menu the way we like... not sure I've come across any software that does that. Go for it Jason!

Yes, I had something like that in mind, too.

Hello,

I'd like to toss my two-cents worth into this topic. I love Yummy FTP and there's only on feature that its missing (or at least I haven't been able to locate it), but how about you add a Bookmarks button in the toolbar. I think it would be of great benefit ... okay, a nice convenience.  ;D

How would this be useful? If you see the toolbar, the you're already connected to a ftp site... would a "button" (I assume you mean a drop down menu) make you disconnect the current server and log into another? Or open a new window with another server in it? Or it is a real button and means to edit the bookmark for the currently site you're connected to?

It would tie in nicely if the Bookmarks window were integrated into the FTP session window, and Tabs were implemented. Both of these are planned for furture versions of Yummy FTP, so at that point it would make sense :)

Oh indeed! Funny, I set up 3 bookmarks that I use and never actually SAW the "Bookmarks Window!"

tip: there is a functional overlap between bookmarks (toolbar option) and favorites. I'd merge these two functions.

tip: use CMD D for adding a bookmark instead of CMD S (this concurs with Safari and firefox shortcuts)

tip: Favorites does not have a rename option so now i have to two favorites called www, because i have a folder called www in two different domains. This makes the favorites option useless...

tip: display bookmarks in the new connection window (not only in the toolbar) next to recent connections and bonjour

have a nice tan,

Jelle

was about to start a new topic but figured I'd add my 2 cents...

I am very much in love with YummyFTP and am considering proposing marriage. However, since I use it all of my working days I would love to see a couple of tweaks that would make my life a whole lot easier. I work on a lot of different sites. Between production and development servers I currently have 74 bookmarks. So, my Bookmarks window needs to stay open pretty much my whole day unless I manually close it/minimize it. When it's open it covers up my desktop. When it's minimized I need to go down to the dock and unminimize it, etc. It adds up during the day.

What I would love is any/all of the following ideas, some of which may already be possible:

1. Keyboard command to show/hide the bookmarks window

2. A bookmarks "dock" or "palette" that could be minimized to an area of the screen or "rolled-up" as in Adobe's palettes. This would leave the window "open" but minimized so that it doesn't cover the desktop/other windows.

3. Provided 1 or 2 are possible, a way for the Bookmarks window/dock/palette to automatically get minimized/disappear whenever YummyFTP is no longer the active application. In other words, when I click on "Edit" within YummyFTP to open a file in BBEdit, once the file opens and BBEdit is the active application, I would love it if the Bookmarks window either disappeared or got rolled up. Then when YummyFTP becomes active again the Bookmarks window reappears.

I'm actually using WindowShade X, but even so I am still looking for a better way to deal with the Bookmarks window. While I think the addition of tabs will be helpful for having multiple connections open, I'm not so sure I'm sold on having Bookmarks as a tab. I think a separate palette/dock that can be mnimized makes the most UI sense.

thanks!

I noticed no one responded to this so I hope this isn't being considered. I see bookmarks and favorites as two completely distinct functions. "favorites" and "history" are invaluable to me and are definitely two of the many things that makes YummyFTP the best FTP client out there.

"favorites", at least to my understanding, are basically bookmarks WITHIN a bookmark, and are not globally shared throughout all bookmarks. the beauty of this is that you can have different favorites for each bookmark. pure genius. If anything I would love the favorites function to be expanded in order to allow editing/deleting individual items from the menu. I know this can be done manually by going to ~/Library/Preferences/Yummy FTP/Server Favorites, but it would be nice if this were an option through the Preferences panel.

Thanks for the suggestions about the auto-hide/show for the Bookmarks window. I'll consider how to approach this.

As for the favorites - I totally agree. I won't be merging them with Bookmarks, since they're different things, just as you said, but an editor for them would be nice.
