Title: One particular SFTP connection fails
Post by: mr.bean on October 16, 2009, 06:10:50 AM
I have been using Yummy for about two years and (I suppose) since the update to version 1.8 a few days ago, one particular SFTP connection fails. I have already deleted the bookmark and entered the login credentials directly, but it still does not work. The strange thing is that I can connect with CyberDuck or sftp on the command line and that every other SFTP connection - even to the same server - does work with Yummy! It is just that particular account. I am using Mac OS X 10.5. Any ideas?

Thanks for your help,
Mr. Bean

The only way for me to debug it is if I can test a connection myself. Please send the connection details to me and I will test it. I will not do anything more than that - once connected, I will disconnect:

Thanks a lot for your help. Unfortunately, I am not allowed to pass on the credentials. Does Yummy use any kind of internal cache or something alike? It seems that a wrong password is sent every three seconds when I try to connect.

How do I completely remove Yummy from my system so I can try a fresh install?

A complete re-install is unlikely to fix this. Yummy might be getting a password from the Keychain which is incorrect.

You should try the following:

1. Check Keychain Access to see if there is a password in there for your server and remove it

Mac HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Keychain Access

Look for the entry(s) with your server IP/name and remove it/them

Quit Keychain Access

2. Use the New Connection window in Yummy and enter all the connection details, then try to connect

(Make sure the New Connection window is properly configured for SFTP and the correct port etc).

Does this work?

If not, can you tell me exactly what the password is? Obviously the password is useless without any other info... It might be that there are some special characters in your password which are causing an issue.

Can you confirm that the same connection definitely works with 1.7.2 ? You can re-download 1.7.2 from the archive if needed:

I have "known" Jason for MANY years and can attest he is 100% reliable... as in I would allow him into ANYTHING I have any connection with as I KNOW he would never abuse such privilege.

I can understand if you are under strict instructions and can't... just want to make the point he is 100% reliable.

I never doubted that at all! Hope you did not misunderstand my previous post :)

Yes, I have just tried it. All my bookmarks now have a .bkmk file extension, but it still works. If I try it with version 1.8, the file extension is not displayed anymore but I cannot connect either :(

There is a < character in the password. Can this be the problem? Is it maybe converted into an HTML entity?

Case solved :) It was the special character (<) in the password. Thanks so much for your help.

Great to hear the problem is solved :)

I admit that I did change the way passwords are sent to the server in v1.8 but it was specifically in order to handle all manner of odd characters that did already fail in 1.7.2, so I'm surprised at this negative result for you.

I will check into it and get back to you.

Actually, this is a kind of pet peeve of mine. I do not consider any character in the lower half of the ascii table to be anything "special," but am annoyed that so many places refuse to accept spaces, plus/equal signs, etc. That get all holier than though to "force" you to use a "HARDER TO GUESS" password, but make it impossible to use things like *&$#)!

Grrrrrr.

This is fixed in the next beta :)
