Resource fork issue ?

Hello,

When uploading (backup) Hypercard stacks (OS9 Classic files) via sFTP and then downloading the stacks the icon of the stacks is gone and the stacks are no longer working in Classic. I guess this is a resource fork issue.

What is the best way to tackle this issue ?

I guess it is a matter of different settings in Yummy FTP, if so the settings must also work for regular OSX files as the backup is always a mix of OS9 and OSX files.

Oh dear, I'm afraid this isn't going to work. MacBinary encoding, which is the only method of transfer which will retain the resource fork and Finder meta data, is not supported with sync or with SFTP.

Since I assume it's unlikely that anyone will be modifying OS9 files in 2011, you could create an archive of them in the Finder and store that file on the server as a backup. Then you could exclude the OS9 files from the sync.

If you have lots of OS9 files scattered around then I'm at a loss for a solution.

Jason, what a bummer :-(

I really need a better solution then making  archives (zips) from all of my many OS9 HyperCard stacks as this is not something I can do automatically as part of the backup procedure.

A workaround could be using a writable disk image (.dmg) of 100 MB for the storage of the stacks but then if only a few stacks of 1 MB total size are changed I have to upload the full disk image of 100 MB and this takes to much time with just 100kb/s upload speed so this isn't a good workaround.

Just as I don't sent login codes for online banking over an insecure HTTP connection I don't want to use FTP for transferring my stacks so it seems I am stuck :-(

Hi,

I would also like to save resource forks which are part of older fonts I still use. Besides MacBinary there is also the AppleDouble format which is used by some server applications providing AFP support by splitting the file on the server in two files. Couldn't this be integrated into YummyFTP?

Looks like using AppleDouble would also allow to mount the server with a different protocol instead of SFTP lateron, as OS X uses this on its own already:

Sorry, as you can see there is a ban on including external links in any postings. This is due to the high amount of spam postings that this forum has suffered, and was the only way to stop the posted links being active.

The problem is not so much the encoding format, as MacBinary is in fact supported via FTP in Yummy, just not SFTP.

Well, if it's still important to people to maintain changing OS9 files, then I guess I need to continue support for it in Yummy... I'll look at adding MacBinary support into SFTP asap

Jason I have tons of stuff with recource forks that I use on a daily base with SheepShaver, a great emulator to run OS Classic files on Intel Macs with OSX 10.4 or higher so MacBinary for sFTP would be a great solution for my backup needs for many years to come :-))
