Being a permanent visitor at the servers firewall
« on: January 19, 2012, 02:44:19 PM »
I'm using Yummy FTP since 2008 and use the same server for my web services company.
I'm working on a Mac with MacOS X version 10.6.8
Very often when I want to upload files to the server, especialy is it's bigger files or many at the time, I'll get stuck in the servers firewall. They keep telling me that I have to set the port to 21, but it IS on 21 all the time! I also use a passive FTP which is also beeing suggested by the server...
They are really mad at me nou, after giving me so many warnings, but I can't find out what I'm doing wrong.
By the way, the same thing happens when I'm using Freeway Pro to upload files to the site.

The messege I get from my provider is that my IP address is trying to use forbidden ports ?!!?

Can anyone help me? Where do I look for the fault?
Thanks a lot!

Your web hosting provider needs to get a clue, to be honest. They evidently don't know what they are talking about :

- You always connect on port 21. If you used a different port it wouldn't connect.

- In passive mode FTP the server tells Yummy what port number to connect to for data transfers.

So, it's pretty clear that any port number allocations going on are completely under the control of their server and their firewall.

The fact that Freeway Pro gives the same 'problems' just goes to prove that the problem is at their end. After all, Freeway is also using the very same FTP protocol to make its transfers.

I'm so glad to hear this! They kept on blaming me for something I couldn't help...
Now I understand. :)
Thanks JD!
