Strange icon after download
« on: May 09, 2007, 01:05:48 PM »

Hello,

I upgraded to Yummy FTP 1.6 and from MacOS X 10.4.2 to 10.4.9 recently and now when I download a file it sometimes gets a strange icon (see attachment).
.php is mapped to TextMate here so I should get the TextMate icon -- and most of the time, everything is fine. But sometimes (can't figure out when or why) it's not. My first thought was that this icon is telling me the file hasn't been downloaded completely (so this would be a "broken file" icon), but the files that a marked this way are complete -- definitely!

"Show Info" from the Finder's "File" menu tells me that it is a TextMate file and it is opened in TextMate on double clicking it, so everything is as it should be... except for the icon.

I know this isn't the worst kind of bug (and I don't even know whether it's Yummy's fault) but it's a bit of a nuisance, though...

Any ideas what might be going wrong?

Kind regards,
Tobias

Hi Tobias,

I've seen this once before and it turned out to be a caching issue in the Finder. Yummy uses these 'broken' icons for files which are in the progress of downloading but which are so small that the usual 'progress bar' icon isn't worthwhile. What's happened is that the change from the 'broken' icon to the correct icon (in this case TextMate) isn't noticed by the Finder and so the 'broken' icon remains.

To clear the issue you could either restart the Finder or log out and back in again. Alternatively, you could duplicate the file, delete the original, then remove the 'copy' from the new file name - the icon is correctly displayed for the new item.

I'll look into ways of convincing the Finder to do a better job Wink

Thank you, restarting the Finder does the job!

I really hope that MacOS 10.5 will have a better Finder -- after all, that caching issue is not the only nuisance...

Hi,

I've found another way to get the right icon… I even had this already installed on my system but I didn't think of trying this before:
It's the Contextual Menu Plugin FileUtilsCM.
Right-click the file, select "File Utils > Refresh" – and Voilà, the right icon appears!
