"This file is already being edited remotely" for images
« on: August 18, 2007, 12:39:59 AM »

When I open an image file on a server it gets transferred and opens in Preview. If I close it and then try to re-open the file, I get the "This file is already being edited remotely" message. Is this because Preview isn't reporting back when a file has been closed? Is there a cure?
Thanks.

That's right - there is no support for the remote editing API (known as ODB) in the Preview app, so there is no way to know when the file has been closed. Yummy can only guess that if the Preview app is still running then the file might be still open too, and so it presents this warning.

ODB-aware apps, such as BBEdit, TextWrangler, TextMate and many others will send a message to Yummy to tell it when a file has been closed, so Yummy doesn't have to guess.

You have some options:

Quit Preview - since Yummy recorded the process ID to detect whether it is running, quitting Preview will cause the process ID to become invalid, thereby invalidading Yummy's recorded entry which it will then automatically remove

Select the Continue button from the warning message - this will open the file for editing regardless, but if the file really is still open for editing then you'll end up with two

Select the Re-open button from the warning message - this will open the original edit file again which should avoid the possible problem of two or more identical remote edits

Disable the warning message - uncheck the 'Check for duplicate edits...' checkbox in the Server Options panel of the Preferences. With this disabled, no checks will be made to ensure you don't edit the same file twice
