Little Quicklook Issue
« on: November 22, 2007, 07:58:50 AM »

Hi,

I noticed that in Yummy Quicklook HUD opens up after pressing Space on a selected file, but then again the Quicklook HUD can not be closed via Space in the same manner as it is in Finder. Pressing Space causes another Quicklook HUD open up.

Not really a bug but consistence with Finder would be appreciated.

Thank you for this wonderful app!

You need to understand that Apple has not provided a way for third party developers to use the Quick Look feature. At the moment, the only apps that have access to Quick Look are Finder and Mail.

However, with a lot of digging around, I have managed to find a 'back door' to Quick Look functionality, and while it is great to get the feature, it does have its limitations. Unfortunately, this is one of them.

I see, that's unfortunate. I have looked around the forum and did not find references to Quick Look shortcomings.

Path Finder seems to work, though. Space opens HUD and closes it.

Thank you for your answer!

Yes, Path Finder has found a way to hack into the API. I don't really think that's usually a good idea, because Apple could change the API at *any* time (it's a private API after all) and then either the Quick Look functionality would be broken, or worse still the app could crash. Obviously, Apple highly discourages this type of programming.

Having said that, I've emailed the Cocoatech guys to see if they will let me in on their secret Smiley

To follow up on this, with some more rummaging around I have found a way to close the current Quick Look preview, just as you're expecting.

My question is: Do all of you only want one Quick Look window? At the moment, you can have several open, which could be useful. If I make Yummy behave like Finder, there will no longer be that option.

Well, I personally would love to see it implemented as it is in Finder - one stroke to preview, another one to close. In my opinion, it's better to follow the Finder way of doing purely because it's expected behaviour.

The second argument is that it's a Quick Look in real meaning of these words - to preview the file and then think of another way to work with it if necessary.

The third argument - even if we think of using Quick Look for multiple files like you suggested - once Space is clicked, the HUD window hovers above the file listing and therefore it is not easy to look on another file without moving the HUD window - it's an annoyance in best case.

I  think that people expect Quick Look to behave like in Finder. I hope. Smiley
