Cannot sync under Leopard
« on: December 08, 2007, 12:58:44 AM »

Hello,

Before Leopard, Yummy FTP was the greatest.  After Leopard, it is nonfunctional.  I downloaded the new 1.7 update, but I get the same problem -- a never ending "connecting to server..." message, but it never actually syncs the files between my computer and the server.

When I use the older version under Tiger, everything's fine, so I know it's not a problem with my website server.

Am I missing something?

Thanks for the help!

This just isn't true - Yummy 1.7 is working very well under Leopard. The OS itself is chock-a-block full of bugs, but that's another story.

So, your situation could be down to two things - a difference in your configuration for Yummy between Tiger and Leopard, or bugs in Leopard itself.

Did you copy across all the Yummy FTP preferences files from your Tiger installation to the Leopard one?  These are:

com.yummysoftware.yummy-ftp.plist (a file)
Yummy FTP (a folder)

... both located in your Preferences folder, which is located : Mac HD -> Users -> Library -> Preferences

Or did you do an upgrade install of Leopard? There are significant issues with an upgrade install which are documented at places such as MacFixit. I recommend anyone installing Leopard to do a clean install - that is, installing onto a fresh hard drive without updating an existing Tiger installation.

Also, since it's not possible to go directly to a synchronization - you need to connect to a server first - you haven't said whether the initial connection works first, then choosing Synch ends up with the 'connecting...' forever problem, or whether you can't actually establish a connection in the first place. If it's the latter then this isn't anything to do with Synch at all. If it's the former, it might simply be that your server doesn't allow more than one connection at a time.

Two things you could check right off the bat would be the Firewall settings in Leopard first of all. You should set it to allow all incoming connections, if it is not already set. The Firewall settings are in the Security panel of the System Preferences

Also, although this would likely have affected Tiger as well, un-check the 'Resolve symlinks' checkbox in the Server Options panel of Yummy's Preferences.

Thanks for yours, JD.  Trust me, Leopard really ripped the rose-colored glasses from my face.  The problems it has caused me are too numerous to count.  I am stunned that Apple saw fit to release that  disaster and to use us to shake down the OS.

That said, I don't have the time to run through and find out why Yummy is not working.  I will say this:  I have three macs at home right now.  I first upgraded to Leopard, but that was a disaster, so I did a fresh install and then migrated over my settings from my prior set up of Tiger.  Yummy did not work.

On the original Tiger setup, it worked fine.  Then, just last night, I applied the 1.7 upgrade to Yummy, and lo and behold, it stopped working even under Tiger, which was the SAME machine it was working under before. Thankfully, I have one last operational mac with Tiger on it and in which I have NOT installed the 1.7 update, and that one works well.

So, as far as blaming OS settings and firewall settings on the problem, I don't think that's the case, JD.  I changed noting on the Tiger install, except applying the 1.7 update, and it stopped working.

I certainly don't know where to go from here other than to avoid updates like a plague on my remaining Tiger and 1.6 version of Yummy.  If you have other thoughts, I'd love to hear them, but as I sit here right now, I'm telling you that Yummy remains problematic certainly under Leopard, and still with the 1.7 update under Tiger.

Don't get me wrong - I love the program. It's the only one out there that handles my site with no hiccups.

One more thing:  In answer to your last question, Yummy can connect to my site.  When I hit the sync button, it gives me the preview like it used to.  It's when I finally direct the sync that it seems to hang.

Thoughts?

Ok, understood hhrussel. Thank you for the clarifications.

So it sounds like I may have introduced a bug for your specific connection when accepting the sync preview.

First, I'm sorry if I was a bit defensive, but obviously Yummy is working perfectly fine for everyone else, so it's a little troubling to see it called 'nonfunctional' in Leopard, when that clearly isn't the case.

Anyway, I want to find and fix the problem you're experiencing :

Please repeat the failure case, and send me the FTP Transcript after the 'connecting...' status has been showing for around 3 minutes. To save an FTP Transcript, select 'Save FTP Transcript' from the File menu. Send the resulting file to : support at yummysoftware dot com

One thing you could try in the meantime is to disable the 'Allow multiple connections' checkbox in the Transfers panel of the Preferences. After reconnecting to your server, try again and see if the problem goes away when that setting is changed.

Actually, one thing I didn't mention was the latest beta build. It would be best to see if you can reproduce the problem there first. Here is a download link:

http://www.yummysoftware.com/beta/1.7.1b3/YummyFTP.dmg

Let me know how you get on.

No trouble at all, JD.  Yummy FTP worked where all others did not, and that's why I was so disappointed at this trouble.  Actually, I'm in the process of reinstalling a fresh copy of OSX Leopard now.  When I last did it, I migrated over my old settings from a backup, and I'm worried that I migrated some crap too.  So, let me see how it goes with that upgrade.  If it then works, then what I will do is run the transcript you're looking for on the other mac I have running tiger that did not work after applying the 1.7 upgrade.  I will let you know how it goes.

Best,

Holiday

Please make sure to install the latest beta in both the Leopard and Tiger installations. There is a sync bugfix in there, so I want to be sure you test with that.

Thanks

Well, I had the same problem as the original poster and must have done the same thing. Dragged and dropped Yummy over from tiger.

If you just reinstall after following suggestond from JD. You need to get rid and do a fresh install.

Would that advice also apply to archive/install? I ALWAYS do a directory fix (DiskWarrior) before archive/install, some directory damage CAN screw up even this method.

FWIW, let me remind folks about "Migration Assistant." I ran this for 10.3.x-10.4 and was amazed at how well it worked, while there were one or two small issues, there WERE thousands of things that can wrong!

Doesn't archive + install import your network settings etc? I don't recall for sure without re-installing... I think it does. In that case, I wouldn't recommend it either.

Clean install is the 100% safe option. That's what I recommend.
