Preview drawer doesn't display all documents
« on: June 02, 2009, 11:02:23 PM »

I was wondering if it's possible to have the Preview Drawer display files that have no standard extension suffix.  For example, there are files with names like ".cshrc" (extension only) and "ftpquota" (no extension) that don't follow the <name>.<ext> convention and yet are plain text files.

I know I could click on the built-in editor icon and view them but often it would be handy to automatically display the file content.

It could treat 'unknown' files as text and display them as such. The reason I avoided this was that being of unknown type, most of the time they are binary files and not human readable.

Probably the best thing to do would be to add a suffix mapping entry for the file types you're wanting to preview as text, specifying that they are indeed ASCII transferred files. Then the preview drawer will 'know' to display them as text.

This is the same problem that I have. In my case I've tried several times adding a suffix mapping entry but either there's something wrong with the entry or its not being used all the time.

Can you provide a screenshot for what a mapping entry for say, either .csrc or .htaccess would look like, and indicate what other Preference checkboxes would need to be set to make this work?

Oh my! ...  Shocked

It seems that there is a bug preventing Yummy from previewing files with names that start with a period. My apologies!

Fixed in b14 which is coming soon Smiley (ie by Monday)

I'm a little delayed in getting b14 out, sorry about that. The Dropbox support changes I needed to make had far reaching consequences, so I need to be sure everything is working right before I release - it changes the way Bookmark files are handled, so it's pretty important I get it right Wink

build 14 works great for viewing and editing 'hidden' files in the preview area. Thanks!

Could you explain how to add a suffix mapping entry for text files that have no suffix such as "passwd" or "ftpquota"?

I added a suffix mapping entry and left the suffix field blank, specified MIME type as "text/plain", encoding as ASCII and deleted the two default suffix-less entries for BINA files. The file "ftpquota" still displays as "Unknown" kind and is not viewable in Preview.

BTW thanks for making the ".suffix" files viewable in the b14 Preview.  It saves me a LOT of time! Smiley

Hmm, well you can't... they have no suffix!

Let's see what I can do for this specific case.

I'm not sure what you're referring to, actually. Do you mean the Bookmarks? These are supposed to always be hidden, and in fact b14 had a bug where they would show up, so b15 fixes that.

I think he means "." followed by a suffix -- i.e. hidden files.
I think

Oh! Yes, you're probably right Smiley

Ok, anyway, the good news is I've added special case handling for the 'no-suffix' files, and you can now preview them in b16 (coming real soon now!)

I downloaded b16 (though the Info window claims it's version b15) and it's crashing on launch:
