RE: Line numbers and or basic Find function in Quick Edit

Hi,

Firstly can I just say I love this software, you have done a great job!  Smiley

I was primarily a Windows based user and have used FTP clients like CuteFTP, but since moving to a mac I needed to find a good mac ftp client with built in Editor as I don't like the way most 3rd party editors integrate with FTP clients.

Your software fits the bill perfectly.

I use FTP clients constantly all day long to install perl and cgi scripts on clients servers and would really love to see the following including in a future version of Yummy FTP:

1) It would be great to have line numbers in the "Quick Edit" function, or if line numbers aren't possible can there be some form of basic "Find" function to search for words in the source code of files you are quick editing.

I think these would be fairly straight forward to implement and so  it would be great to see them in future releases.

Thanks again.

Andy.

A reasonable request but then Quick Edit is just that, intended to allow a correction of a word or two here and there.  It is not meant to be a fully fledged editor, which surely is what you want.  If Yummy included Find and line numbers then wouldn't you next want Replace and how about coloured syntax?

Have you tried any 3rd party editors? Yummy does a great job integrating with quite a few of them.  My choice is BBEdit which has all the bells and whistles that you could need (and more).  Or I would recommend its free version TextWrangler which has all the most common features.

If you deal with many perl and cgi scripts then you must surely use a proper editor and maybe Yummy is already compatible with it.  Perhaps you are not aware that Yummy will automatically download a script and pass it to the editor. When you save in the editor, Yummy sees the change and sends it back to the server.  It just couldn't be easier or more convenient.

Hope that helps. I'm a believer in not filling a gap that is already filled!

Hi  spacific,

Although I appreciate Quick edit is as the name suggests, but in my opinion "quick edit" does not necessarily need to mean bare bones basic.

If fact if it had line numbers it would make my life "quicker".

I dont think requesting line number is a massive ask is it?

Yummy does integrate with 3rd party editors but they are overkill for what we need.

We simply upload the perl scripts onto the server and then "quick edit" them to swap out the default configuration variables for that of the actual server variables.

We use a "proper" perl editor in the development of the scripts themselves, Yummy is just used to edit the config settings.

I am only basing this on what we have used previously on the Windows OS, where a basic editor with line numbers and find is built in to most FTP clients. On OS X they all seem to rely on 3rd party apps.

Thanks again.

Hi Andy,

Firstly, thanks for you kind comments!!

Both the things you've mentioned have been requested already and are being considered for a future release Smiley

That said, spacific is right that the third partly editor (particularly the free TextWrangler) support in Yummy is very quick and tightly integrated. For anything other than bare bones basic, I recommed using one.

Thank you for the feedback.

Hi JD

Thanks for your comments.

I have just tried using TextWrangler and although it appears a good app on its own, personally I feel it is cumbersome when used in conjunction with YummyFTP.

IMHO, you just can't beat the ease of use of the drop down Quick Edit function  - but hey you can't please everyone  Smiley

Thanks again.
