Questions

I really enjoy Yummy FTP, especially the fact that I can exclude folders from a synchronization process.  That's one MAJOR hole in Transmit, and one which I was creatively fighting for many months now.  Thanks!

After using it for a few days, I have several questions and suggestions on how I think Yummy could be better and more intuitive:

1.  On the Synchronize prompt, if I click "Automatically detect time offset", I expected that the time options would be disabled.  Why aren't they?

2.  On the Update Server Preview prompt, I love the fact that I can see the items which are going to be uploaded or deleted.  However, when I click on the item to get its path information on the right, it takes about 2 or 3 seconds for that information to appear.  That's pretty sluggish; can it be faster?  Or better yet, can you show the path right there in the item column?  Since that could be pretty long, you could just show it relative to the folder that is being synchronized.

3.  When using DualBrowse, it would be nice if I could right-click a folder on my local machine and click one of the exclude options, and then a prompt would ask if I want to also exclude the same folder on the remote machine.  What do you think?

4.  On the Bookmarks window, is there a keyboard shortcut to edit one of the bookmarks?  I keep thinking to try Command+I (back to my Transmit days).  If you make these available, you could show the keys on the right-click context menu.

5.  I really liked tabbed browsing from Transmit... any chance you are planning to implement this?  Not a major feature request, but something which I am used to doing as a part of my development cycle (Safari, Firefox, TextMate, Yummy?).

6.  I keep losing the Bookmarks window.  Can you make it automatically appear if I click the Dock icon (and no other windows are open)?  Also, when the Bookmarks window closes, it automatically collapses all the folders (major annoyance).  Can it remember the folder statuses?

7.  For the life of me, I can't find a changelog on your website anywhere.  I realize that it comes bundled with the application.  But say I want to see what you've changed in the beta before downloading it... how do I do that?

8.  Here's something I haven't figured out yet.  I have a bookmark with several folders excluded from Syncs (so I don't overwrite any uploaded files on the server).  Is it also possible to create a scheduled backup on that same server, but which will download everything (including those folders which were excluded from Sync)?  Or do I need to create a separate bookmark for this?

Thanks for all your hard work!

Hi joelstein and welcome! Smiley

You are still allowed enter a value yourself, in case the automatic detection fails for some reason.

Do you have 'Quick Look icons' enabled in the Interface panel of the Preferences? Sometimes it takes a while to fetch the Quick Look icon that is displayed on the right. Maybe they should have called it 'Not Very Quick Look' Wink

The path does already appear in the list. Perhaps resize the Preview window, or scroll the list horizontally to bring the column into view. Note that you can rearrange and/or resize the columns to your requirements.

Yes, that makes sense.

Yes, CMD-E

Already planned for a future version.

I'll look into these issues.

The Software Update mechanism will show you a list of what has changed before you download the update. If you download manually from the website there is no way to tell beforehand, but once downloaded you can simply launch the app then select 'Read Me' from the Help menu - the entire version history all the way back to v1.0 is there.

You'll need a separate Bookmark.

1.  I see... I find it counter-intuitive, but what you're saying is that despite what it's those fields, if the box is checked it will first try to auto-detect, and then if that fails, it will use what's in those fields?

2.  Ah, there's the path... way over to the right.  I moved that column to the left of the item column.  That helps.  If I had my way, I would prefer that those two columns be consolidated, so I don't have to mentally join them together.  Is that possible?

Regarding Quick Look... I don't seem to have that checkbox in my preferences.  Is that a feature for 10.5?  I'm on 10.4.  I attached a screenshot.

3.  Cool, added to your huge todo list, huh?  Smiley

4.  Thanks!

5.  Great to hear.

6.  Thanks again.  These are minor usability features, but it would help make the experience a little nicer (and secure your Transmit-to-Yummy user market, who are used to a very slick design).

7.  Oh that's good.  Thanks.

8.  I see.  Is it possible through AppleScript?  If not, maybe you could add an AppleScript command which is part of the synch process that gives you the choice to enable (default) or disable exclude rules?  Heck, that would be a nice checkbox to see on the Synchronize prompt, down in the right-hand corner... "Honor exclude rules".  What do you think?  With this option, it opens up a whole world of scheduled auto-backups up your website to the local harddrive.

Thanks, again!

Yes, that's the idea. It's perfectly possible for this to fail, so it makes sense to have a backup plan.

I'm not sure why there is a need to join the two fields together. Most people probably don't want to see paths, but just item names, and optionally see the path. In any case, if you've re-arranged the two columns are next to each other, isn't this pretty much what you want? (The arrangement is remembered, in case you didn't know)

Yes, Quick Look is a feature of 10.5, so I can't think of a reason why you would have a delay clicking on an item in 10.4. Do you get a similar delay if you click on an item in Column view in the FTP Browser?

Yep!

No, even via AppleScript you need to refer to a Bookmark to issue actions. An option such as you suggest would be the way to go on this, I think. More items on my To Do list !

2. I get no delay in column view—only in that preview page.  However, it's less of an issue for me now that I see the path column.

Thanks again for everything!

I just found the cause for the delay on that preview page. Fixed in the next beta Smiley
