Yummy icon
« on: September 12, 2008, 01:37:43 PM »

Hep!

I started using Yummy about a year ago. When I use Yummy FTP I switch a lot between that and several other apps. The only thing that really annoyed me, was that the original icon was hard to separate from the other UI elements in Mac OS X. Instead of waiting for that company mentioned in this old thread, I just had to make an icon that fit my needs better.

Here it is in 128 px:

It is inspired by the Network icon in Mac OS X but created differently (copyright issues?), and I gave it a jelly-like (mmmm... jelly...) color, and a candy-like edge. Of course someone (with a somewhat weird teeth row) took a bite  Wink I have an .ico-file (consider it beta quality) with resolutions from 16 px to 512px (Leopard-optimized) - just PM me and I'll email it.

If the creator of Yummy likes it, I will off course give it away for free.

Any feedback/comments?

BTW: Here are some alternative views:

Wow, that's amazingly generous of you! Thanks!! Smiley

It's nice - very distinctive, even at small sizes, and it does stand out from the other icons more easily in my Dock. I don't know whether you saw the icon from ' that company' but the design is quite similar - the jelly blob with a bite mark. This one seems much more defined, though - I like that Smiley

What does everyone think?

Wonderful, I great improvement. Not what I had in mind in that other post, but at least it is distinctive and attractive and will work at small sizes which is how icons get used most -- I've tried it:

Much better than the current icon which looks like a spreadsheet at small sizes.
Well done.

I like it, although I'd darken the blown out portions of it.

As in more like the Growl "version" which does look quite different/better.

I agree that the Growl version looks best.  Not as much glare and the middle 'bite' is more towards the center.

Thanks for kind words and constructive feedback!

I've done a revised design based on your feedback and toned down the glare and gave the bitemark some "dental work":

Sizes:
512px size
32px size
Yummy-FTP.icns

Edit: Fixed link to .icns-file

The last link you gave (for Yummy-FTP.icns) fails.  Otherwise, good!

Thank you for your hard work on this Smiley

My opinion is that while the new bite mark is vastly improved, it needs to be a smaller bite, otherwise it detracts too much from the circular blob shape. The overall effect is that the icon seems more orange in color than red, and slightly less three dimensional, because the darkest part of the red color has been 'eaten' by the bite.
