How can I limit the number of connections (pref seems not to work)
« on: April 23, 2009, 02:53:05 PM »

Hi. To start with Yummy is a potentially the answer to my prayers I just have one little problem which I'm sure someone can help with.

I'm sending image files from location to my imac at home which I am then using multiple yummy watchers to send to multiple editorial sources at the same time. Unfortunately as the number of images I send through stacks up so does the number of connections to the 8 or so addresses I send to. Eventually once 5 or 6 images have been sent through (one at a time as am sending via 3G network) there are potentially 48 connections open on the desktop all of which are running super slow or stalling. Is there a way of limiting it to 1 connection per server and queing the incoming images behind the one being sent to each address? I've tried changing the preference server connections limiter which doesn't seem to do anything.

There is probably something really simple I'm missing but I need someone to point it out Smiley

Thanks

Dan

The preference affects each Watcher, not the connections to the server over all the Watchers and FTP Browser windows open at the time. So in your case, each Watcher is limited to one connection.

One way to get around this would be to use several frequently scheduled synchronizations working off one Bookmark. Not quite the same solution, but the closest you'll get with this limitation on the server.

The only other way is to get your server admin to allow several connections - preferably more than the number of Watchers you intend to use.

Thanks JD but I think I probably didn't explain myself properly.

The folder on my imac that I FTP images from sports games to has 8 watchers in it which are all set to FTP those images out to 8 different servers/addresses.

This works fine until 1 file is being uploaded to those 8 addresses when another file drops into the folder (they don't all come at once) and it too begins to upload to those 8 addresses. This obviously creates 16 seperate upload dialogues. By this time they have all slowed down and when another image drops into the folder another 8 upload dialogues open up and begin uploading. By now the whole thing  has crawled to a halt and the uploads begin stalling. If I send through say 10 images one at a time then potentially it could take several hours to clear all of the uploads which takes away the point of using the ftp software in this way.

I have tried changing the connection limiter to 1 but this has no effect at all.

What I ideally would like is for yummy either not to initiate the next upload until the first 8 have cleared or to queue the next uploads until the set ahead have cleared. Is this possible?

Many thanks

Oh yes, I forgot to mention that I can't use the sync facility as the folders on the servers I am ftp'ing to are cleared every few seconds so my computer at home would keep sending the files to the newspapers everytime it synced and they would soon get very annoyed with me  Wink

Also I'm not sure how they would feel about me repeatedly syncing with their servers every few minutes?? These are multinational news organizations so I don't really want to get in their bad books.

You're right, I didn't understand fully.

There's no built-in way to handle your particular scenario with Yummy. The only thing I can think of is the multi-site upload AppleScript example that is included with Yummy (select Extras from the Help menu). You could use it to send to multiple sites sequentially, but the script requires you to save it as an application and then drop your file(s) onto it, so you might try attaching it to the folder on your iMac as Finder folder action (right click in the Finder window to see Folder Actions options.)
