Newbie seeking help.
« on: May 14, 2009, 04:56:49 PM »

I am new to mac and very new to Yummy. Even as a complete mac novice (and a very experienced windows user) I am absolutely delighted with Yummy, as software goes it,s absolutely wonderful, and reflects it,s developers attention to details. Well done JD.

Now I would like a selection of top tips for websites building uploading and managing. Please use simple jargon free language and where possible explain when it might be equivalent to a windows operation. E.g. control v in windows is paste and apple key and v is paste, i.e. the same function but just slightly different.

I need to explain why I need this information. I am a voluntary community activist with left wing leanings, and unfortunately the projects I support usually involve issues that affect working class people / communities, that do not have access to any spare cash. My philosophy therefore is to utilise what skills we have available to us, and where we can share those skills we do so. Unfortunately that means fighting our corner with little or no money and therefore looking at ways to utilise whatever is available to me free of charge. And the internet is great for that, but it has it,s limitations.

THats the ptich for assistance, now here,s what I want, and I don,t want money, so let,s get that out of the picture.

As a result of my new skills acquired on my new macmini, I have discovered it is relatively easy to build websites for my friends working in the local community. I have been using the free webspace that comes with mine and my friends landlines. It,s 100 mbs though and it,s not a lot when I include video etc, also Yummy tells me it,s X i.e. 23.4mbs, but then I try to upload more and I get the message saying I am over quota. Can anybody explain how that works. I,ve tried contacting my phone company support, but that only confused me worse. They told me that if I buy my own 100 mbs, it,s a lot more than the 100mbs I get free from Eircom my phone company?

Anyway the other issues I would like is a list of top tips that you more experienced people have discovered using the greatest FTP software in the world. Just little things that might help me to maintain a high quality face for these voluntary unfunded groups.

I thank you in advance for your assistance to the Irish Minister for Lost Causes.

JD you have done a great job on this software, fair play to you, I hope your making a fortune, but I suspect it won,t be long before Apple or Microsoft buy you out, and if they do, make sure you get enough to cover the obvious affection you have for your customers.

Regards

John, thank you so much for your kind comments about Yummy FTP ! I'm definitely not making a fortune, sorry to say, but it's a respectable income for my hard work Wink

As far as tips are concerned that's a really open question and far too vague for anybody to reply, to be honest. The idea of the forum is to get help with a specific topic, so please do come back when you have some particular questions.

One thing I can answer straight away is your confusion about the quota. This is the amount of disk space you have allocated to you on your web server. If you upload too many files or too many large files you'll run out of disk space and will need to purchase additional space, or reduce the size of the web site.

JD I know its a vague request I make, but, I also know there are people out there that have discovered ways of doing things that are simple when you know how to do it, and hopefully they will respond to my request. they don,t think their tips are valuable but the reality is I can,t afford to get trained in all the aspects of supporting NGOs in a voluntary capacity for websites, but others are already trained and will share their toptips. The real problem is they think everybody knows it, but they don,t, and they are the people I,m trying to encourage to come forward. People that understand the jargon for professional reasons, but they can change it into language I can understand.

JD you have a job to do and I don,t expect you personally to try address this, so I,m hoping volunteers will come forward, and I bet they do.

Just give it a bit of time and you.,ll see.

I,m glad your making a good living, you work very hard for it, and your attention to customer detail, is extraordinary in todays world.

Here's one tip: learn the difference between a comma and an apostrophe -- you'll earn more respect from readers!
