Multiple Permissions Updates and Symlinks
« on: December 22, 2009, 08:38:18 AM »

For the past couple of days I've been trying out every SFTP client on the Mac after experiencing some problems with CyberDuck. It seems Yummy FTP is the most feature complete one of them all, but it's still missing a couple of things:

1) If you do a Get Info on a group of files/folders with different permissions, they all change to 000. The best way to do this is the way Fetch does it, where the permissions that are different between files are marked with a minus sign, and you can change one of the other permissions WITHOUT changing the permissions you don't explicitly change. For example, I often like to make everything in a folder unwritable, and if the files in the folder have multiple permissions, the ONLY thing I want changed is the permission I change myself (i.e. deselecting the write permissions in this case).

2) The ability to create symlinks on the server. It seems only the ancient MacSFTP can do this, but it is VERY useful.

1) Seems like a reasonable request. I'll add it, but might not be able to do that very quickly. (eg next update)

2) This should be easy enough to add. I'll try to get it into the next update for sure Smiley

Thanks for the feedback!

Thanks JD - that's the $28 response I was hoping for! Smiley In fact you've just fulfilled my third, unstated request - a responsive developer. Wink

I agree that remote symlinks should be easy to do, but seeing as nobody else does them, I thought they must really be difficult or something. They're certainly extremely useful - for example, the structure of my sites requires the duplication of a few folders, which means that without symlinks, I'd have to update all the duplicates individually. Symlinks means I only have to upload the content once, and everything is up to date.

I'm guessing the problem is that SFTP is an afterthought for most aps - basically, they just see it as a "secure FTP", which is why they don't implement many of its great features (like real usernames instead of meaningless numbers for permissions, and having the file icons reflect their permissions e.g. if they are writeable or not). Thanks for providing what is, in effect, the first REAL SFTP ap for the Mac since the long dead (and now hopelessly out of date) MacSFTP!

oh dear, me toooo - so if you really do this, you'll have my 28$ too

and - in that mentioned, ancient macsftp I could make symlinks with drag and drop, holding down the option key

I realise this shortcut is used for copying (in fact why I found out macsftp could do it), so maybe it could be option-shift instead

one more thing I truly miss too - and maybe it's just me being being stupid - in macsftp I could see, in top of every listing, two folder icons with, respectively 1 and 2 dots - the 1 dot was used fir refresh and the 2 dots for going to parent folder

none of the apps I've been trying out shows me these, even when the "show dot or hidden files" option is chosen

otherwise yummy is just that: YUMMY :-)

I'm working on it Smiley

The drag and drop to create symlinks is already functioning in the latest build. I will release a beta with it included asap.

The . and .. folders represent 'current' and 'parent directory' respectively. You can always reach the parent directory by using cmd-up arrow, or selecting the parent folder you require from the popup menu above each browser listing. A directory up button has been requested for the toolbar already - I'm considering it.
