Symlink alias drag & drop
« on: January 15, 2010, 03:44:06 AM »

Hello Jason,

I am not sure how to use the new option :
"Create Symlink/Alias - use drag and drop to create just like in Finder"

How can I create such an alias and how do I use it ?

Best,
Wim

Hi Wim,

Hold the option + cmd keys while dragging. You will see the mouse pointer change to an alias indicator. Drop wherever you want the symlink/alias created. (Note: some keyboards read 'alt' instead of 'option')

You can also use the cmd-L menu item shortcut to Make Alias from the File menu.

Symlink creation is only supported on servers which you have SFTP or SSH access to. FTP servers do not support this. However, alias creation on the Mac side is always available.

Hello Jason,

Thanks for the explanation, I misunderstood the new option.

I thought it was possible to create a symlink of a folder on my webspace and place it on my Desktop so the alias would behave like a WebDAV folder in the Finder.
This is not the case, when I create an Alias and drag it to to the Desktop then the alias is copied and so is the content of the original folder on my webspace.
I can however create an alias of items on my webspace and place this alias in a different location on the webspace, this option can be handy for a fast switch or copy of items.

Thanks again,
Wim
