Colour labelling of files/folders?
« on: July 19, 2006, 05:31:52 PM »

It would be really nice if you could label files/folders in a remote listing with colours as you can in the Finder.  I have lots of folders and lots of files with similar names and choosing the one I want to open or edit requires careful reading of the names. At various times of the year there are certain folders/files I want to open regularly (e.g. just now I want data06S2, as opposed to data06SS and data06S1 which I don't need right now).

On local drives I guess the label is saved as part of each file's info, which wouldn't be the case for a remote server, but you could keep a record by name of which files are coloured.  Anyway, it would be a very useful feature -- for me at least! Just something to keep you busy ...

Cheers.

DUH!  I see this has already been suggested in May -- and you implemented it in 1.5.1  Cheesy

Er, but I have looked for how to use labels several times and haven't found anything. Right-clicking on a filename doesn't help, and I can't see anything in the toolbar or menus. Probably me being blind again, missing the obvious.

Regards.

Smiley

Well, I didn't implement server listing colour labelling. Only the Mac listing labels, as set in the Finder, are respected.

I'm not sure how it would work on the server, since the label data obviously can't be stored there. Storing that information locally seems unwieldy too.

Perhaps if you maintain the labels on your Mac, you could use DualBrowse to open the correct server folder for you? This won't help for files, though, apart from when you're using Column view.

Phew, I wasn't being blind.

Couldn't you just maintain a list of file/folder names and colours, saved locally? Doesn't seem unwieldy to me -- you are storing other types of data, like bookmarks, locally.

Thanks.

Sure I could -  there would have to a list of these settings per server, of course, and I'd have to keep a track of which labeled items get deleted or renamed. This would mostly work, but there would be edge cases where the data would get out of sync - for example a labeled item gets deleted by the server administrator, or another user... your local 'remembered' setting will stick around and never get deleted. This obviously leaves a mess behind, but worse, if a new folder was created with the same name and in the same location then it would take on the label color... strange behavior I would say. I suppose I could work around that with some additional identifier, but it serves to illustrate my point that this feature implementation could get quite messy. Bookmarks, on the other hand, are completely under the control of the user - there is no automatic housekeeping that needs to be performed.

Let me think about it some more. Maybe it's not as bad as it seems.

Any other votes for this feature?

Thanks for giving it some consideration.

If Yummy ever displays the server list and a file with a saved label isn't present, then you delete the entry from your label records. That should catch most if not all cases.

If not, then the unexpected behaviour you talk about 1) is unlikely, and 2) isn't that bad: the user can just get rid of the colour, whether they understand where it came from or not. No big deal.

Cheers.

This gives me another idea... would you consider a listing of the to-do and give users an opportunity to prioritize?

And WHERE are the vacation pictures<g>?

Sure, it would be a neat idea to get some feedback on priority from users. I'll do this asap.

All my pictures are in iPhoto, of course Wink

I feel guilty asking, but is this coming along?     Grin

(I was just hoping it might have made it to the new 1.5.2 beta as well as my other request.)

Since I already distributed the latest beta of 1.5.2 now, you'll know that I didn't include this feature. Yet ... Grin
