« on: July 15, 2011, 05:24:24 AM »

Hello Jason,

Can you explain how to use the new log option of YFTP 1.8.5 ?

There is now a Logs folder in the Yummy FTP folder of:

Mac HD -> Users -> yourname -> Library -> Preferences

Inside is a folder per server and inside there are datestamped log folders

Each of those has an FTP Transcript file which contains the entire 'conversation' between Yummy and the server, with datestamps inserted so you know when things happened. Additionally, for each completed transfer there is a datestamped entry to confirm that.

Note that logs are kept (by default) for up to 30 days - older ones are automatically deleted when Yummy starts up. You can change the 30 day setting in the Preferences.

Note that for new users the Yummy FTP folder is now located in Application Support due to the requirements for the Mac App Store.

Hello Jason,

Thanks for the fast reply.

Please don't' take me wrong, I am happy with the log option but I think the way the logs are stored and displayed can be much more user friendly....

I am one of those people who choose for a Mac decades ago to have the option to stay away from anything that looks like a commandline and when viewing the content log files I get the same nasty feeling that prevent me back then from using DOS PC's.

What I like to see in YFTP is a Log window that can be called from the menubar and only mentions a list of the copied files and folders.
As they are the logs are giving too much information...

Well this can be much better but I am sure you get the idea, an easy and fast to read and understand log that only mentions the basics.

Again, I am happy with the Logs as it is better then nothing at all.

Best,
Wim

I understand that criticism and take it on board for a future update.

The fact is that FTP and SFTP *IS* command line based - those are UNIX originating protocols, nothing to do with PCs or DOS. Yummy just hides it all from you with it's user interface.

Whenever anything doesn't work for someone, I always ask for the transcript, because that's the only way to see exactly what happened. That means the user has to repeat the problem, which can very often not be repeatable, or can be very infrequent, or take several days to complete. Having logs with all the information like this solves that problem.

There is a lot of information, but if you're looking for a specific file transfer just open the log file in TextEdit and search for the file name. It's fairly easy to see when the file was started and whether or not it was completed (and when) because Yummy now inserts a << date stamp >> comment to that effect.

Once you've seen that RETR or GET means download and STOR or PUT means upload, you'll get used to it very quickly - it's really not that complicated at all Smiley

You're welcome!

I know that every feature can always be made better, but it's not a bad start, especially in comparison to no logging whatsoever  Grin
