Is it possible to disable preview feature?
« on: August 27, 2011, 02:57:46 AM »

So I love Yummy FTP but I have one major problem. After downloading a folder containing individual compressed files from a FTP site, Yummy FTP seems to want to redownload everything again for a "preview" from the remote FTP. Some of the folders are gigabytes of data and it's wasting my bandwidth. I don't think it's anything I'm choosing to do and it seems to be doing it automatically after a certain period of time.

Is there a way to completely disable this "feature"? I've looked through all of the preferences and the manual but don't see anything related other than the "auto" checkbox that you can access via "View->Show Preview Drawer". It's unchecked for everything I can see. Maybe I'm missing something.

Thanks!

A preview will occur if you:

- press the spacebar to initiate QuickLook
- have the preview drawer open and the Auto checkbox is enabled
- have the preview drawer open and you click the looking glass icon
- have the preview drawer open and you click the QuickLook icon

If the QuickLook window is currently displayed then a preview will occur automatically

So, to turn off preview completely have Auto un-checked and the QuickLook window not showing.

Thanks JD for the incredibly quick response!  Cheesy

Yes, without doing any of the actions you mentioned on my first run of the program, that is exactly what happened. The preview drawer was closed, I hadn't seen it yet at that point. There were no quicklook windows open. My keyboard seems to be working fine as far as I can tell. No unexpected spaces. I went to bed and the transfer had about another 2 hours to go (it had been going for about 4). I woke up about 8 hours later expecting everything to be complete and there was message about creating a preview or something similar. Yummy FTP was downloading at full speed.

It actually happened the next time I made a transfer a few hours later, so it wasn't an isolated incident.

I see this message in the console and I don't know if it's related at all. I probably wouldn't even mention it if it didn't have the word "Preview" included.

8/27/11 2:09:43.771 AM Yummy FTP: [QL] QLError(): -[QLPreviewPanel setDataSource:] called while the panel has no controller - Fix this or this will raise soon.
See comments in QLPreviewPanel.h for -acceptsPreviewPanelControl:/-beginPreviewPanelControl:/-endPreviewPanelControl:.

Any ideas on anything else I can check into? Are there any log locations other than system.log I could check?

Thanks!

Very odd! You're a first-time Yummy FTP user trying the demo?

Which version of Mac OS X are you using, and what type of Mac?

I think the console message means QuickLook is being triggered without an associated outlet - no QuickLook window.

Hi again JD,

Yes, This is the first time I've used Yummy FTP. I've been a FTP user since the early 90's though and this is the best FTP program I've ever used! I'm running Mac OS X 10.7.1

So after thinking about it for a while today I think I've determined that the problem is a factor of a few things, none of which is really a problem with Yummy FTP.

1) In Lion, Apple has disabled wake from sleep using the mouse. It used to work fine in Snow Leopard.

2) I have traditionally used the space key to wake the computer if for some reason it was more convenient than the mouse. Being the biggest key on the keyboard it's the easiest to hit and previously space did little to cause any problems regardless of what OS you were running.

3) I use a Mac and PC side by side and my girlfriend also occasionally uses this computer.

So if Yummy FTP is in the foreground with something highlighted on the remote server and I go to wake the computer by hitting the spacebar it starts downloading for the preview. My monitor takes a few seconds to warm up and if I'm doing something on the PC or walk away for some reason it will take a minute to notice it. Or if someone else uses my computer and hits the spacebar to wake the computer while Yummy FTP is in the foreground and then moves it to the background it might be a while before I notice. It's also possible that I selected another application without immediately noticing that Yummy FTP was downloading the preview.

So I guess the solution will be that I either have to hit a key other than space to wake the computer, move Yummy FTP to the background when I'm not looking at it, or keep something selected on the local folder on my computer in the left window so that a preview won't have to download from the remote server.

I guess I feel a little silly that I didn't think of all of this earlier and was getting so frustrated, but I guess I'm only human. LOL.

Thanks again for all of your help.  Grin

Well I'm glad we found the culprit Smiley

I'm not sure whether the key used to wake the computer should be fed into the frontmost app as an input event though ... I think that's a bug in Lion. I will double check but I don't think Snow Leopard and earlier did.

In any case, I will investigate!

Thanks for getting back Smiley

I guess I wasn't clear about that. I did say "wake my computer" but I am usually just waking the display. I leave the Mac running 24/7 (it's a server) and the display sleeps after 15 minutes of inactivity.

Thanks!

Ah.... yes it's clear now.

Oh well - good to know in case it crops up with another customer. Thanks Smiley

I always use an arrow key to wake up monitor or computer. I haven't found an instance where this can do any damage or have any unexpected effects.
