Faster uploads when using external editor
« on: June 16, 2006, 06:35:28 PM »

I use an external editor (BBEdit) to edit HTML files directly on the server and then refresh my web browser to see the changes. Each time I save the file, Yummy procedes to establish a connnection with the server and then upload the file.  It would be faster to reuse the connection that is already open and just upload the file right away. When I am doing many quick itterations,  the extra few seconds that it takes to make the server connection really adds up.

Compare speeds with Cyberduck and you will see what I mean.  In Cyberduck, when you save the external file, it is uploaded in 1-2 seconds whereas Yummy takes 4-5 seconds.

This would greatly improve my productivity.

Sorry for a delayed reply - I'm currently abroad on vacation and having to use a PC (blech!) in an Internet cafe I finally found.

I'll try to improve this when I return.

Thanks for the feedback!

Hi, Jason.

I came looking on the forum to see if there was a way to speed up the transfer after a save and found this thread.

I too am experiencing 5 second delays before the file is uploaded...did you have a chance to look into this?

Best,
Andre'

Hi, Andre. I have to admit that this one slipped past me. I will look into it. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!

I discovered the 3 seconds discrepancy in speed is because Yummy FTP always opens a new FTP connection to transfer the file, whereas CyberDuck always re-uses its browser window connection if it is open, which saves on the time to establish the network connection and log into the server. If the connection had timed out, though, CyberDuck would have to reconnect just as Yummy and the timings were the same. And if the browser window was closed then all remote edits were lost. Oops!

So, it would be good if Yummy also took advantage of an open connection to the server. The problem is, I've designed Yummy to use separate connections for all transfers, including remote edits, and although I have built in single connection support for transfers, the remote edits still require a secondary connection right now.

As it happens, I already have this improvement as an item on my To Do list, although not for the above reasons. I'll get to it as soon as I can Smiley

I don't understand this JD. Isn't the open connection used where possible?  If the connection is in "Idle" mode then a file transfer (Mac to server) takes about 2 secs. If it is "Disconnected" then it takes 3 or 4 secs. Therefore in the former case it appears, from the timing, to be using the existing connection. No?

This thread is about Remote Editing upload speed:

For normal transfers, the open connection is used, when it makes sense to do so.

Remote Editing uploads do not use the open connection - a new connection is established every time.

Oh, so it is. Apologies for that!

(I find that remote editing upload is often 5 secs or more, but it can be very fast at not much more than 2 secs, so it is clearly server/line load dependent to some extent.)

No worries Smiley

Yes, you're right - the delay to establish a connection is largely out of Yummy's control.
