Focus on FTP
« on: May 16, 2007, 01:38:08 AM »

Here's something that constantly bugs me:

When I connect to an FTP site I get a window with two panes; left-hand is local stuff and right-hand is FTP stuff. So far so good. Now I want to navigate around the FTP files, and often this relies on using the Favourites. But these are dependent on which pane has the focus, and when I connect it's the local stuff that has focus, not the FTP stuff.

It's FTP software ... shouldn't the FTP pane start off having the focus? Maybe the ideal solution is to have that setting saved along with the bookmark ... ?

It's the natural first focusable item in the window which the OS chooses - I haven't specifically selected it. I suppose there will be others that want the Mac files focused first, so it does sound like a preference setting is in order, but I do wonder if it's overkill - after all, you only need to tab once to focus on the server listing.

Of course that's true, and perhaps I'm just struggling to find something wrong with Yummy FTP  Smiley but it annoys me that I still haven't learnt that I have to tab before clicking on the faves button.

Understood Wink

Maybe Yummy could just remember the last focused list. How about that?

Actually, there may be many instances where someone would WANT the local side to be the first focus... they launch Yummy with the intention of uploading a file, so the pane having the "file to upload" should be the initial focus. They finish the session by poking around the ftp server, then quit. If "last focused list" is enabled, they launch and get the "wrong"  pane as the initial focus.

IMO the only "proper"  way is to have a pref that can be set per bookmark... but I think default behavior is local focus because that's  what I suspect the majority expect.

You're right - the only solution is an actual setting, although I'm a bit hesitant to add a setting just for initial focus... it seems a little over the top to me.

Bottom line: Does anyone else want this?

I'm all about options and can't imagine trying to dissuade you from adding one. I've no problem with an option for this, but to answer your question, no, I've not noticed that the current default is any great inconvenience.
