Multiple Remote Editor's for different file type extensions
« on: November 03, 2005, 11:35:07 PM »

The new version 1.1.5 is great!

I've been meaning to ask if there was a way to add multiple editors for different file types. For instance BBedit for .php, .html, .js etc... Then a different editor like CSSEdit for .css file extensions. This would be really useful for remote editing.

Thanks for everything! The new FTP Watcher is great!

Great to hear 1.1.5 is going well Smiley

What you're after is already present! Although I have to admit I would like to make it simpler to configure in a future version.

You need to select the Suffix Mapping table from the Transfer menu. In there you will see just about every known file name extension, with separate transfer controls for each. For each one you can specify an editor application - look at the Helper Application section at the bottom, and the 'Use as default editor' checkbox.

brilliant!!!

I was just about to suggest the very same feature as I am currently on the fence between BBEdit and TextMate. I have been using BBEdit for ages but there are a few things I really like about TextMate. However certain functions are much better in BBEdit (find/replace, compare 2 front documents) so that there are certain times that I need to open up a particular file in BBEdit.

I'm really glad to see there is an option to do this by suffix mapping, but what I'd really like to be able to do is define several different editors and be able to select which editor when clicking on the Edit icon in the toolbar. Maybe the Edit icon is a folder which when clicked reveals a menu of all defined editors?

My current workflow is TextMate for most coding, StyleMaster for CSS, and BBEdit for find/replace/diff.  So while I can map .php to TextMate there are occasions when I'll need to open up a PHP file in BBEdit for find/replace/diff.

Any way to accommodate this?

Currently, the only way is via the Edit With... option from the Menubar or contextual menu. I guess it would make sense to extend the current Edit toolbar icon to display a dropdown menu with other editors you've configured if you click on the Edit toolbar icon and hold the mouse down... a single click will open with the default editor, as it does now. Sound good?

sounds great!  I had envisioned that it would work similarly to the Favorites and History folder icons in the toolbar. Maybe by default the default editor is selected so as not to annoy users who only use one editor?

First off, thanks for a great piece of software.  And thanks as well for the amazing support you give it with responding to feature requests and user issues.

My current workflow is a lot like tu11ym0n.  TextMate for most editing, BBEdit for diff'ing.  What would be really handy for me would be a key command for "Edit in secondary editor..." (Cmd-Shift-E maybe?).  You'd probably also need to extend the preferences to allow a secondary editor to be defined.  Something like this would save me a lot of time, since I'm constantly navigating my way down to BBEdit in the "Edit with..." contextual menu.

Thanks.

That sounds useful. Others, who might stick with one editor for text, could define the second editor as one for graphics editing. That would fit nicely - thanks for the suggestion Smiley

lehmkuhl nailed it on the head.   I was just about to follow up my previous suggestion with another idea borrowed from Dreamweaver. Dreamweaver allows you to preview in browser by hitting F12 and previewing in an alternate browser by hitting shift-F12. It would be great if YummyFTP could mirror this functionality but apply it to editors, i.e., F12 opens the file in the default editor and shift-F12 opens the file in the alternate editor.

Sounds good to me, except I would steer clear of the Function keys (Apple likes them for Dashboard, Expose, etc) and use the Cmd-E and Shift-Cmd-E shortcuts instead.

Or of course you could use Return and Shift-Return (see my other post   Wink).

Ok here's what I did:

I made use of the 'Edit With' menu - each entry in that menu now has a keyboard shortcut, starting with Cntrl-Cmd-0 through Cntrl-Cmd-9

So, now you can have up to 10 alternative editors available at your fingertips.

Good?  Grin
