Yummy FTP / Problems & Bugs / Re: Sync Can't Work!

Straight FTP server (commercial web hosting outfit).
Ah, must have blanked on bookmarks having unique options... I enabled Use MDTM in them bookmark I use (as well as the upload droplet) but didn't enable "Use UTC" as I'm still used to the 12 hour clock.
Sync not withstanding, getting the date/time to be the same needs to happen first. So after I changed the MDTM thing in the bookmark, I deleted a folder and re-uploaded it from scratch. Again, what was uploaded seemed to take on several odd characteristics (I sent you an image to the support number).
So let's take this painful step by step if you don't mind!

Yummy FTP / Problems & Bugs / Sync Can't Work!
|
on: May 29, 2007, 05:45:58 PM
|

Just ran into an issue I could swear I have seen discussed, but I can't find that discussion. I was in the process of uploading a site and tried to use the sync function to move the changed files after my initial upload. EXCEPT it wouldn't work because the "time" the files were tagged on the server was not the modified time of the file but the time it was uploaded AND it was offset by 4 hours in the future (which I think is the current offset time from me to GMT/UTC).
So it seemed no matter what I did, all server files were always "newer" than the files I had which were definitely "newer" than the ones on the server. AND the only UI control I see is a "maintain modification dates of transferred files" in the Transfers tab.
So I am double whammied (British term, right-o?) Still, I could swear this didn't happen a while back, I can remember sync's that went exactly as they should go.

Yummy FTP / Feedback & Suggestions / Re: Focus on FTP

Actually, there may be many instances where someone would WANT the local side to be the first focus... they launch Yummy with the intention of uploading a file, so the pane having the "file to upload" should be the initial focus. They finish the session by poking around the ftp server, then quit. If "last focused list" is enabled, they launch and get the "wrong" pane as the initial focus.
IMO the only "proper" way is to have a pref that can be set per bookmark... but I think default behavior is local focus because that's what I suspect the majority expect.

That brings up another question that could be of some interest to some. Actual document files can also be protected via a password (other than archives containing multiple files). Say it's a tiff image, or a .mov movie file. Both of these CAN be "previewed" in YummyFTP (not so sure about YummyRecipies). If a password protected file like these are selected for previewing, does Yummy provide a mechanism for entering that password and then allowing viewing of said file?

Yummy FTP / Feedback & Suggestions / Updating Yummy FTP
|

One smallish suggestion; I tend to be a tad type A, so I like to have an archive of various versions of any particular application (with SL DVDs costing less than a quarter, why not). So I tend at time NOT to use the update mechanism built into the application because it rarely has an option to save the distribution.
Might it be considered that the update mechanism have an option to "leave" the dmg behind (assuming this IS the mechanism used)?

Yummy FTP / Problems & Bugs / Re: Problem connecting to P4HOST.com - EPSV issue?

Lylo, not sure if you already know this, but there is a "archive/install" option for "re-installing the os." Essentially, it leaves all the apps you added and your entire user folder intact while replacing all bits and pieces of the OS with new files. MUCH less painful that a "wipe the drive then install."
The problem is that the 10.4.8 combo update is probably no longer available, at least not from Apple, so you may need to find someone who has an archive copy of it.

And with a developer like Jason who actually implements about 95% of ALL user suggestions, 10 bucks is a major bargain!

Yummy Software / General / Re: How to connect to a local testserver environment ("MAMP") ?

Thanks Jason, I kind gave it a quick glance once upon a time, but there seemed to be so many configuration options that I'd need to spend a lot of time studying... maybe I'll give it another look. I'm actually thinking about FTPAliases that I could e-mail to a pal who may have no clue about ftp, preset to come to my machine, etc.

BatChmod is one totally cool application.
JD, I've been meaning to figure out how to set up a ftp server for those times I want to have a place for pals to transfer files with me, but you post above gave me an excellent simple way to do it. Set up an account for them, YummyFTP to copy file to it, then have them connect to it! We LOVE no muss, no fuss.

Yummy Software / General / Re: Problem using watcher and keychain

Actually, this is something I haven't posted about but have had problems with... I'm still looking for a 100% repeatable pattern. The problem is that frequently, a login fails, especially if one connects by double clicking on the FTP Alias.
The problem is that it does NOT happen 100% of the time. I have tried with the password embedded in the FTP Alias and without, again, I find no consistent behavior. Example, at present, the password is in my keychain, yet I have no trouble connecting to my web host. The last time I tried to do this, it failed and I had to do it a second time to get a connection.
Weird.

Yummy FTP / Feedback & Suggestions / Re: FAQ(?)/Request: Reveal passwords?

Ha, JD and I had this "conversation" a while back!
One thing that springs to mind... this perplexed me a tad. Let's say you have bookmarks that DO have passwords attached (stored inside) to them. And you also have one stored in your keychain. And you set Yummy to use the keychain version. AND that password gets changed (this happened to me). Under this set of circumstances, I thought I'd just change the keychain one... but I had issues logging in. I solved that problem by making sure the bookmark did NOT contain any password at all.
Then again, I'm a big believer in the keychain, especially after the Tiger update (it acquired a search ability). So from a strategy viewpoint, I'd suggest keeping you passwords in there and not in the bookmark files Yummy keeps.

Ah! Ok then... cool! For what it's worth, I know someone at Cocoatech, and I'll be asking them to support the same API that Finder does as a feature request. This will enable Yummy to 'talk' directly with PathFinder if it is running. Wow, one would have thought this occurred to them a long time ago! Yummy uses an AE mechanism, correct?

Maybe it's a "well I've been trying to justify getting a much larger monitor and am thankful this can go into the 'reason to get' column' in the debate! Especially if there are wives/girlfriends in the mix.
